I had no idea the school had closed. Marva Collins did a wonderful job educating her students, she was a great teacher and it was sad to see her leave CPS, but after she open WSPS we all found a new respect for our fellow educator. I believe the school was located @ 8035 Honore Steet, Chicago, IL. Not sure if the building is still in place.

I've heard several different stories in reference to the closing of Glady's; I know she turned ownership over to a friend of her's many years ago (in the eighties), the Chicago Public School Teacher tried to retain the business, but changing times prevented her from doing so, the closing was due primarily to higher cost and fewer patrons. I remember East 63rd Street in the past; today I hear there are condos and townhomes and a few new businesses. Some years ago you're right it resembled a war zone. The El used to go as far east as 63rd and Stony Island. Going west there was a Sears and a Wieboldt's Department store at 63rd and Halsted. There was also a Kreges Store.

Yes I remember the stores you mentioned, I also recall several more such as: Chas A. Stevens (State Street), Bonds (Various Locations),Woolworths (Various Locations)and books stores on Wabash Ave such as B. Dalton and K&B. Steinway's Drug store was also a popular Southside neighborhood store. Gone are days of those retailers.
