There was an Andes at Pulaski and Milwaukee just across from the Milford Theater. I remember my mom treating me to an ice cream confection at Andes called "Lover's Delight." It came in a very tall fluted glass. There were several layers of colored syrup at the bottom with various flavors of ice cream on top. Also, there was an Andes on one of the corners of Milwaukee, Diverse

There was a drug store on the corner of Belmont and Central Park (SW corner) when I lived in that area. I don't remember the name. It had the typical giant glass containers of colored water in the windows. Even though my friends and I passed it often, there wasn't much we could buy there except for a box of cough drops or gum. It was pretty sparse with wooden shelves and paneling and

A college friend told me that she and her sister attended Our Lady of the Angles. The day of the fire they were both home sick. A neighbor came down the sidewalk screaming up at their apartment to try to get their mother's attention. "Where are the girls?" she cried frantically. "The school is burning!" Much to her relief, they were home. My friends and her mom hadn't

There were two retail stores that predated the big-box discount outlets: Advance Sales on Pulaski north of Irving, and Central Sales on Milwaukee Ave. south of Central Park. Our family purchased things like window fans, wading pools, hula hoops, hair dryers, etc. It was a favorite shopping place for parish clubs when they needed to buy gifts for raffles. Often they would beg for freebies

Keystone Drugs on Milwaukee and Pulaski was the nearest store to our house. In addition to the pharmacy, there was a large display floor with most of the things you might find at Walgreens and a mini gift shop. They usually carried things we couldn't find elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Years ago some friends and I decided to get Greek food in the Lawrence/Lincoln area. It was once as popular for Greek places as Greektown is now. The restaurant was empty except for one table occupied by a couple. We sat down and ordered. I kept looking at the man at the other table. Then we all started sneaking glances. The man was Mike Royko with the young woman that would soon be hi

I didn't actually see this but I read about it after the fact. Katherine Hepburn was in Chicago and staying at the Drake Hotel. She had recently recovered from hip surgery and walking was part of her daily routine. She was spotted walking down Oak Street Beach, bending every few feet. She was collecting litter. On the return trip she walked briskly back to the Drake. When asked why

I worked at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Many prominent Chicagoans served on their board of directors. Once I got on the elevator with Ernie Banks. The next time it was Ann Landers. As usual, I couldn't think of a thing to say. Also, in connection with RIC, when the new hospital was completed there was a gala celebration and the actress Patricia Neal was the guest of honor (sh

During that wonderful time of the Cubs playoffs some friends and I were circling around trying to find parking near Rush St. Down a dark side street we spotted Nick Nolte looking like a homeless person.

Back in the 70s a friend and I decided to wind up an evening at the Division St. clubs with a drink at the Pump Room. I approached the glass doors and while talking to my friend I started pushing instead of pulling on the handle. I felt a push back and when I looked up there was Harry Caray laughing at us from behind the glass. We finally let him escape. We saw him dining at his restauran

I remember a small pizza/Italian restaurant called "Marsi's" on the NE corner of Lawrence and Nagel. I don't know how long it was there but the pizza was great. The dinners were excellent. Sorry to see it go. They had two storefront dining rooms, one for dinners and one for pizza. As a frame of reference, Elliot's dairy was on the other corner and Butera directly across the street

As a kid I heard about Matt Iglers "home of the singing waiters"--I think on Lincoln. I begged my folks to go there but we never did go. Anyone remember it?

I'm pretty sure it was the Round Robin. Yummy chicken in a basket with a small container of honey on the side as a condiment.

This one wasn't too far south; Harlem south of Ogden. I am referring to The Dumpling House. A nice homey place serving a European menu (Bohemian mostly). It was still around in the '90s. The homemade soups, dumplings and complimentary kolachky were great. We used to take carry-outs too. On the weekend evenings they featured a woman playing the accordion. A riot! Roast pork and chic

rjmachon, my childhood memory was way off. Elk Grove is about 2 blocks long starting on Wood St. at the south and slanting to North Ave. on the north. My grandparents' home was just at the bend in the street near the North Ave. end.

Nardo's was our standy on Pulaski near Milwaukee. Super greasy. Almost next door to it was Casa Luna; a tiny dining room with pizza that looked like it came from the supermarket. Years later we found it was a front for a bookie joint. Father & Son was a favorite and is still in business on Milwaukee Ave. and North Ave. Correction: Casa Luna was not the name of the pizzaria nex

Thanks everyone for jogging my memory for some of these theater names. We lived near the Milford on Pulaski and Milwaukee. I worked there in high school selling candy and popcorn. I forgot that the Mercury was located on North Ave. near Harlem. I always thought the Will Rogers was a nice theater. Saw the Sound of Music there. Seemed to be a larger screen than most. A neighbor always

Kchi, I totally agree that supermarket goods don't compare to some of the best bakeries. People are just willing to settle for it. We made many trips to Reuters even though it was a ways from home. Delicious baked goods.

Two bakeries located in the Avondale area in the '50s were Palace Bakery on Belmont and Monticello, and Crawford Bakery (I think that's the name) on the corner of Roscoe and Milauukee. We shopped at both. Bakeries were packed on Saturdays years ago. Now you can get bakery quality breads and rolls and even party cakes at the supermarkets. I think people started to limit bakery goods to holid

Shoreline, I don't remember the Pie Pan but I just thought of the Magic Pan creperie in Old Orchard and in Chicago. Also the Jojo's chain which is now occupied by Baker's Square. The Rusty Scupper had a location in Lincoln Park and near River Rd. on the Northest side. It was an interesting seafood place.

My grandmother and grandfather owned a 3-flat on Elk Grove Ave. just off of Damen. It had the vaulted sidewalk which rendered the first floor below street level. The property was well cared for with a large backyard. I heard that the bathrooms were once located in the outside hallways. My mom's family completely remodeled the building which they bought for $3,000. My mom as a teen, pursua

There were plenty of restaurants that my family visited over the years that no longer exist...alas. Steer & Stein was a favorite on Cicero south of Addison. Good burgers etc. in a pub-like atmosphere. Spoke and Yoke was located on Central just north of Irving (I think). Steaks and american fare. The Wishing Well near Elston and Irving. Heidelberger Fas Lincoln. Great atmosphere.

janusfanning, I went to Alvernia High School. I saw you mention a lady named Ester Dudek who worked at Klaus. I knew a Dudek family from our parish (St. Wenceslaus). My mom was friends with a Helen Dudek. Maybe the same family. I also remember a tall blonde lady who worked in the cosmetics dept. at Klaus. She was always so nice to my cousin and me when we came in to buy Heaven Scent, Go
