In addition to the Colony, Marquette and Hiway, does anyone remember the Acadia at 55th & Fairfield? I think it closed in the late '50s and was torn down a couple of years ago.

I'm about 99% certain that those concrete structures were coal pockets for the many coal yards that were pretty prevalent throughout the city till the 1940s & 1950s. The coal was sold by different grades(sizes of the chunks) which explains the bin-like pockets. The railroad coal hopper cars would be positioned over the proper bin and dumped. I remember the blonde Cameo building but not much about the restaurant or lounge as I was a bit young at the time. I lived at 58th & Campbell from '53 till '66. I remember the coffee shop & news stand.
