'V' building adornmemt

Can anyone explain exactly what the 'V' represents on this building? You see it a lot on Chicago structures.

a "y" is a symbol of Chicago, representing the river split downtown. Never heard of a V.

It will undoubtedly have something to do with the original owner or building name.
