Pharmacy in Brighton Park

Does anyone remember anything about the pharmacy in Brighton Park? I believe the pharmacist's name was Joe? Not sure though. I grew up in Brighton Park, and I used to go there with my grandma. I think it was before Archer and Kedzie.

I would imagine there was more than one in that neighborhood, but the one I remember was Brighton Pharmacy on the north side of Archer maybe a block, or block and a half east of Kedzie.

I think that was the one. It wasn't far from Huck Finn's. Do you recall the pharmacist's name?

I have a 1971 reverse directory for Chicago. If you can give me an address I can check that.

Strictly an approximation, try 4314 S. Archer. I haven't had anything to do with that pharmacy since 1988 when my uncle died and I'm just making a guess here.

Looking at that block, on that side of the street, in 1971, we have the following listing:
4300-Square Deal Building & Heating Supply House Inc
4308-Chicago Public Library
4312-Standard Television Service
4328-Matthew's Supreme Homemade Sausage Shop
4330-Briski Hardware & Supply Co.
4336-EF Obrzut
4340- TE Lesinski
4342-R Nowicki
4344-US Army
4346-Lorraine Gray Beauty Salon Inc.
4364-White Castle System, Inc.
4380-12th Ward Regular Republican Organization
4382-El Ray Driving School
4384-Joan's Beauty Shop
4386-Archer Ave. Beauty Shop
4388-Suda Radio and Television Service
4392-Holiday Enterprises Incorporated
4400-Power Ford, Inc.

I can't find a listing for any pharmacy or drug store within two blocks of your address. Can one of the individuals listed be your drug store?

Seems unlikely that someone would have a listing by an individual's name rather than the business, but who knows. Would you mind checking the 4200 block also?

Thanks to bowler, a very good and resourceful friend and member here I have the address for the Brighton Pharmacy. It was located at 4280 S. Archer just as I remembered it, about a block and a half east of Kedzie. Thanks again to Rob, AKA bowler.

Thank you Dunning1. The big surprise here for me was 4270, the Sam Santo Sport Shop, as I remember there being one a couple doors just west of California on the south side of the street. Sam lived on our block and he died young, I wonder if the family got out of the location I recall after he passed away and moved a bit west. I guess I just never knew about that location.

There was a pharmacy at Francisco and Archer on the corner. I vaguely remember that it was a Polish family that owned it and the building that had a couple apartments for rent.At that time we lived at 4117 S. Francisco a few hundred feet off of Archer.

Someone mentioned Sam Santo's sporting goods store on Archer - Kelly High School was right around the corner. Myself and other kids/students would go to Sam's for the green Kelly high school sweaters and various sporting goods. Sam was an athletic looking guy and always a great guy to do business with and just talk too. Always had a big smile with nice white teeth. That was in the early/mid 50's.
