Very cool pix Artista, is that string that some one tried to block the hole with?

Nice photos, Artista! I'm so glad you had luck finding some more in the neighborhood. I found one more bin yesterday and will post that picture by this afternoon.

I was walking in an alley in Wilmette behind 225 Central Street and came across two of the old Granitine units (see picture). I had no idea what they were and I friend discovered this thread - so now I do!

Apparently they were installed outside Chicago, too.

Chicago Granitine was at 3224-3230 S. Shields. Here is a photo of their main product, laundry tubs.

Here is the source, some interesting reading.

I wonder what these are used for now, or what they could be used for.

I remember family members on Linder over by Belmont and Central having those in their backyards, but I remember their fences not being so carefully cut open to allow access.

We had one behind my grandparent's 4-flat at 65th and Mozart. AFAIK nobody used them as incinerators, and when the City decided they would no longer allow us to use them for garbage, a Streets & Sanitation crew came through the neighborhood, busted them up, and hauled away the pieces. After that it was only 55 gal. drums for the garbage, until the City provided carts.
