I know this has been discussed before but, just saw a " Y" on a building at appx. 5208 N. Clark St. Was this an old city of chicago building?

I think it represents the branching of the Chicago River.

I just found this site which explains the Y.

I just took a look at the building (someone has posted nice photos on Flickr), that's the municipal seal alright, but I don't think/very very strongly doubt that that building ever was a city facility/property - as I think I've mentioned before (on that other thread), other buildings sometimes have it, such as the building I was born in (well, that we lived in at the time).

There is an article with photos on the Municipal Device right here. In fact, it's referenced in the link Fleurblue provided a few notes north of here.

I maintain a flickr group for the Chicago Y. If you've got photos, send 'em in!

Even better, you can explore the Ys on a map:

If my memory serves me, the Y at one time was the center of all of the bus and subway tokens anyone have any old tokens who can verify this ?

I know i wasn't going crazy.. I looked up old street car tokens and found the Y
The 3 branches were NEW YORK-BOSTON-and CHICAGO the token was last used in N Y C and was still in use at the time f the N Y Worlds Fair. I'll do a little more research and try to find out more.

Hugh, Yes, the "Y" design was on the old CTA tokens. I'll take a photo of one that I have saved and post it here as soon as I can.
