Free walking tour of WPA art on the UIC campus, Friday October 9th

The UIC west campus is host to a well-preserved cluster of paintings, mosaics, sculptures, and other mediums of expression created under the auspices of the Federal Arts Project in the 1930s. Less well-known than the existing murals in many Chicago area public schools and post offices, the art on the west campus features themes from medicine’s history and heritage.
A new exhibit on display at the UIC Library of the Health Sciences Special Collections and Archives Department draws attention to this chapter of American cultural history with archival photographs and three wood carvings by artist Carl Hallsthammar.
As part of the citywide Chicago Open Archives: Collecting and Connecting event, a viewing of the exhibit and a walking tour of the current locations of the artwork will be offered at 2:00 p.m. on Friday October 9. Participants in the tour will make seven brief stops to view the art and hear details about the artists.
The exhibit, displayed in two cases on the third floor of the UIC Library of the Health Sciences, is open to all during the building’s regular hours. Those interested in the October 9 walking tour are encouraged to register at the Chicago Open Archives event page.
