I grew up going to Gladys' Restaurant but haven't lived in Chicago in many years. The restaurant, I believe, was an important part of the community and the food was "authentic" soul food. In addition, Miss Gladys (as we called her) embodied many of the best values of the culture. She was as warm, comforting, and supportive of the people in that neighborhood as her cooking.
