Here are some pictures that I snapped of the Lawndale Theatre (4010 W. Roosevelt) demolition. It is VERY sad to see such a substantial building demolished. This neighborhood is REALLY hurting.

Hal, I stopped doing this. When I am out trying to buy these for my collection WAY to many people are saying "there's a site on the internet where some guy lists the price for every one of these that sells and I want a lot of money because of that!" Sorry, I'm not gonna shoot myself in the foot anymore.

I went and took these pictures of the former location of Fried's dry goods store which was located at 1455 S. Pulaski in North Lawndale's "Merigold" Bohemian section. The building was probably built in about 1905 or so and was originally a store owned by H. Lurie. (I have an absolutely AMAZING 1909 era photo of the block). Bohemian immigrants Arnold & Laura Fried took over the space

Guys, take this from me....the Forgotten Chicago Facebook site SUCKS. I mean it's absolutely horrible. There are 9,000 people registered there with a million topics posted per day with 500 morons posting all at the same time. For instance, there's a picture of Al Capone's house listed with no address in the initial post. There was 10 different goof balls asking where it was located because NON

He might have referred to them as Bohemian apartments because the frugality (a.k.a. cheapness lol) of Chicago area Bohemians was legendary. Garden apartments usually brought the cheapest rent therefore a lot of Bohemians lived in them including ones that owned their own buildings. Why take a main floor apartment in your own building when it could command more rent? Take the basement and make mor

Tom, please note that there are two different neighborhoods, North Lawndale and South Lawndale. The neighborhood you were from is SOUTH Lawndale. That is the neighborhood my book Chicago's Little Village Lawndale-Crawford is about. http://www.amazon.com/Chicagos-Little-Village-Lawndale-Crawford-Publishing/dp/0738577375/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345181761&sr=8-1&keywords=frank+magallon

There was an independent Bohemian bottler in Pilsen named Alois Vana. He was located at 1938-37 S. Carpenter for decades, the building no longer stands. I believe his son moved to Berwyn because there's a park rec center down the block from me with a plaque by the front door dedicated in 1994 with the name of Alois Vana on it. View of where the building was: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1835

B.A., Cicero Field was in Cicero, IL between Cicero Ave & Laramie and 16th St. & Cermak Rd. It was turned into a sub division called Parkholme in the 1920s. The 1912 Chicago aviation meet was held there.

Guys, Svoboda was a VERY common Bohemian surname. You aren't saying that this guy is the same one mentioned in my link above? That would make him 110+ years old!
