They are somewhat similar to the Metra Electric stations in places (though they were mostly brick built under wide viaducts rather than "inside" the fill of the viaduct.

It's called a "box" abutment, or "vaulted" abutment. I encountered these while working on plans for a consultant to refurbish the Jackson Drive viaduct over the Metra Electric in Grant Park. The Congress Drive viaduct is built like that, too. Places for future installation of substations (Park District, used to have their own electrical system) and so forth, but a pain in the neck if you have to beef up bridge supports.

The bridge over the Van Buren station is FINALLY being redone after, well, most of my life being a wreck.
