Diogenes9561 Wrote: --------------------------------------------- A couple of my HS buddies lived near Southport and Addison and we used to get pizza from Logalbo's, too, back in the day. Great thin crust pizza, good memories. Another great thin crust pizzeria was Riggio's on the west side of Western Avenue just north of Irving Park Road. It was a full service restaurant, too, and I remember

I looked up the address in the 1929 Polk Directory (and I also looked up my own address). Really fascinating. I'm wondering how to interpret the entries where there are numerous persons shown at one address. Were most homes split into apartments or am I misreading the directory? I realize addresses may be slightly to very different to present. Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, It's been too long of a hiatus from my favorite board! My friend who lives just near North Avenue and N Marshfield Avenue (1614 to be exact) is experiencing some "interesting" events in his home. It's not an old home - very new actually - however; he is trying to find out any information on the land, what was there in the past, etc. I've looked and haven't found anythi

Hi Sue, Here's a shot from 1913, but it's of the stadium. Thought you'd still like to see it. Once on the site, click on the photo "A New Ballpark" in the Cubs timeline. http://www.dipity.com/ehoffm03/Cubs/ Kelley

The owner has been out of town, so I haven't had an opportunity to talk more about what she knows. I will post as soon as I see her next ... More info to follow. Thanks rusty for looking!!

Here are some photos of the studio: Studio Photos When I get back from our little weekend (going to Galena to hopefully relax and maybe find some antique stores along the way), I'll post some photos of the bank safes! The landlord told my trainer that it was indeed a bank. That's a crazy story about the kidnapping, rustymuscle!! I have to read more about that. Thanks for looking! Have a great

Hi everyone, I do Pilates at a studio at 1528 North Halsted, a 100+-year-old building. The owner of the studio, who is also my trainer, mentioned to me that there are some old bank safes hidden in the walls of her building. Sure enough, she showed me one behind a door in a massage room, and another had been made into a changing room. A great old building, but I'm wondering if anyone knows t

OK, I meant to say Rustymuscle and not Rustynail :) It's like sport peppers and a Chicago brat.. you just can't have one without the other (or, "da ader" as per the Super Fans). You guys are great.

The postcard I posted (Yondorf) is indeed (as also pointed out by Captain54) at North/Larrabee. I looked up the cross streets in the Proceedings of the City Council on Google Books. I really wish it was Yondorf Hall! Oh well. Next time. Great job Rustynail! WayoutWardell: I would love to see some old photos! Thanks for checking on the address. P.S. Thanks to you guys for letting the

Rustymuscle: maybe you are right? Could the 1965 photo be the intersection of Weed and Larrabee, not Ogden? I am really tired, so if I am totally off, everyone forgive me. This makes sense in my exhausted mind. 'night. Kelley

Just to go back for a moment to the original post... Look! Is this? Could it be?? Yondorf!? North/Halsted, looking East. 1909. Ok, I am having heart palpitations after this find!

In looking more at the original 1965 photo and also the 1988 photo I posted, I have two findings: 1) the second word on the ...acumen's sign is "wine." 2) I think the ...achman's would have been closer to where Chase is now, and not Terry's. Look at the angle of Ogden. It wouldn't intersect with Weed until farther Southwest, considering that the 1965 photo was taken South of the Brow

Ok, I called Red Hots and no one answered. I will walk over tomorrow and ask because I need to know! Wow; you guys did a lot of research since I last logged in! I have my friend checking too... He grew up right here, so I will milk him for more North Ave/Halsted info, as Captain54 had originally posted.

Can anyone make out the words which appear next to ...achman's in the original photo captain54 posted? I got out my trusty loupe and believe the second word is "Liquor." Maybe you guys already saw that, but my eyesight is not too good in my forties! That was an interesting thing you spotted WayoutWardell! Maybe we can research the shape of the sign in respect to what logos were out th

Wow, WayOutWardell. Those are some interesting, yet grim, photos. Thank you for posting them. Also, captain54, your photo of Weed/Ogden is great!! WayOutWardell, I also live on Burling, just south of Willow on the west side of the street! There are some houses that are still original on the south side of Willow, although almost all are gone. If you find out, please let me know!

Thanks, Captain54, for continuing my original discussion about my neighborhood! I wish I had something more than photos of old restaurants from the 70's/80's; but alas, I do not. I've done quite a bit of research about the restaurants from North/Halsted to Armitage (so many French places..). It's become an obsession. WayOutWardell, where did your parents live on Burling, if I may ask? It's sad tha

This is one of the most interesting threads I've ever read! Wow. Just Wow. Thank you Berwyn Frank for starting this research and for those who added to it. I learned a lot and it's a completely new concept (my husband is Italian and saves everything, but to think that this family kept their family store for so many years)! Simply amazing and a wonderful story. Thank you!
