I didn't want to interrupt the discussion on the wood brick replacement in the alley between State and Astor, but I did want to bring this to any Chicago film buff's attention. Check out the building at the east end of the wood brick alley, across Astor. You might recall this is the psychic institute where Amy "Gillian" Irving was cared for in the 1978 movie, "The Fury." When s

Pulled this off the internet about district 29 and their new building replacing the 731 N. Racine building. The date of the newsletter is September 1960. I saw this photo of the 1968 riots on Ebay. Does anyone have an idea what the vertical thing is to the left of the garbage can? I thought it was a parking meter, but it really doesn't look like one I've seen. Thanks. riots1968 by Rustymuscle, on Flickr

There is quite a bit of information about Western Electric's Hawthorne works on the internet. They made all kinds of appliances, telephones and telephone equipment. A museum was built on the site in the mid 1980s and when they closed the place it was moved to Morton East High School (If memory serves me correctly). The museum is now at Morton CC.

Watching "City that Never Sleeps." I swear this scene was used in an M Squad episode. Haven't located it in M Squad, but will look. Additionally, I don't think this is on location in Chicago. Note the incline in the background. Lastly, there is a blinking sign in the shot (it was off when I grabbed the screen), "Stack Building" and I find no Stack Building in Chicago phone book

I did a random check of Chicago phone books from 1937 to 1962. Didn't find a Rinaldo Taylors. Also checked a couple suburban phone books. Doesn't mean it isn't from Chicago, just haven't found it. It could be from Chicago city/suburbs, it could be from another large metro area. Can you post a photo of it?

I think I solved the issue and uncovered a really old sign. I didn't see it anywhere but on Ebay. I noted the CTA logo was an applique. And, I found a photo of the same sign, but for Chicago Surface Lines Bus Stop. So, I carefully drilled the rivets holding the applique and uncovered the orignal CSL logo. It is the same sign as this one at the Illinois Railway Museum. This confirms the red bac

Hello, I recently picked up this CTA bus stop sign on Ebay. It was the type that was mounted on a pole secured to the sidewalk. I was wondering... ...if someone might have a photo of one in use? And an approximate date of usage? ...if someone might have information on the actual, original color scheme? In cleaning the sign up a bit before restoring, I see what appears to be original red p

Where Bryn Mawr used to traverse is now a trail in the forest preserve. Perhaps forest preserve expansion or the North West expressway was a reason it was closed

Jakter Hotel, 4701 s. Kedzie, 847-2161. If my memory serves me correctly, this building was quite historic as it was the first AT&T long distance office in Chicago. From what I recall, it was two or three stories tall, biege brick. I was sad to see that one come down. I think it was built in the 1880s and was torn down in the 1980s. Geez, I used to have a photo of the place when it was the LD

I know the yellow and black street signs are popular collectibles. But, I was wondering... When where the yellow and black street signs initiated? I have one dated March of 1951. What did the ones prior to the yellow/black street signs look like? Were there other styles early on? Thanks for any information. RM

Well, it's not a working elevator, but we have this old remnant above the pantry door in our kitchen. It is from the 230 W. Washington telephone building.

I used to work around the corner from 212 W. Madison and can't believe I do not recall that Stark's store! The building (s) came down in the early 1980s I believe, and replaced by the present day office building. This address is between Franklin and Wells.

Question about "Hogarth's" at 759 S. State. I haven't seen the movie in a while, but recall this scene has Stewart coming out of a subway entrance. I don't see a subway entrance around 759 S. State. Did the CTA get rid of this entrance? Thanks, just curious! RM

Something I've noticed. If one looks closely at the daytime close up shots of the M Squad police station the lights to the left and right of the main door say, "M SQUAD." However, when they have a nighttime close up shot of Ballinger in front of the main door of the police station, the lights to the left and right say, "POLICE." Just a thought, but was thinking by the time t

I should have benn more specific, sorry. In the film Northside 777 there is a scene where Stewart visits Wanda's apartment. He is shown walking near an elevated track and the scene shows an Honore street sign in the 700 block, which is incorrect so the sign must be placed for the scene. On another thread, it appeared others were attempting to find the actual location of the scene.

I haven't seen Northside in a couple years, but made a wild guess about the tanks when I started watching M Squad. BTW, I too had been nosing around trying to find the Honore Street sight....no luck. Thought I was the only "goofy" one around that liked this stuff!
