I checked random city directoris and phone books from 1866 to 1945, found no Frank Petces in Chicago. Here is where several early city directories are located... http://georgekrejci.com/

Richard, Try GeorgeKrejci.com for some directories (not phone books). Also google the 1929 Polk directory for street address information. RM

There was a Marsh Floors there. Might that be the linoleum store you are asking about?

Rob, I believe if you do a search on this forum you will find some photos. Additionally, go to the Forgotten Chicago facebook group archives, several photos there. And of course, should be lots out there on the internet.

Quite amazed at how many structures are still in place in the full photo, including the water tank stand. The ghost sign in Lance's cropped photo is still there, but not legible.

Just wanted to clarify, the 1947 photo in the link is slightly north of the photo on question? So, the original photo is looking directly west, just south of the view in the other photo? If you pull up historicaerials.com, it's pretty clear.

The average size home around 1950 was 800 square feet. People did what they could and didn't worry so much about having their own bathroom/bedroom/tv/etc. A girl I dated in high school had 7 brothers and sisters in a 3 bedroom/1 bath house. They shared...a lot!

I checked the 1951 and 1960, didn't find a George Shimaus. Perhaps another spelling?

With the information Shekaago has offered, I went back and did some more checking. --1929 Polk directory (on line) -- 1762 N Larrabee, appears to be a paint shop. 1764 N. is shown as Kosh Hall. --Subsequent directory searches found no Kosh Hall. Could have changed names, but I didn't find a "Ballroom" (listing head for dance halls) listing at those addresses. --1957 Reverse dire

Go to the Forgotten Chicago facebook group page and search the archives for NW construction photos. At least 5 in there. Plus, some Ike construction photos.

A Berwyn phone book only offers information about Berwyn. But, I recall Chicago went to all number in 1977 anyway.

Or download! Ebay has had some great photos of Chicago history over the years. A couple sellers have been selling off the Sun Times/AP photo files. I've downloaded thousands of photos. These photos had no watermarks.....many now do.

The photos at the FB Forgotten Chicago site may be of some help. There are some good historians there too, I would check it out.

If you search the Facebook Forgotten Chicago group, you will find several photos of the accident posted....and discussed. I would post the photos here, but it takes a bit of time. Just go to FB FC group and type in green hornet, should bring up several photos.

Is it just me or does it seem the signs have gone soft in price the last few months? I mean signs in general, not just the street signs.

A seller has CDs of old Chicago directories on Ebay. Originals are found on occasion there as well. Chicago Public Library has them, too.
