Hmmmm, I drive through Hegewisch every so often, I have to look more closely. I have a friend who owns a travel agency there. She seems to know everybody; when I think of it I'll ask her, though she will probably think I'm crazy. Right, too about the maintenance. I had to replace my well because of the pipe casing and the thing was so damned old. This was in Michigan. Chicago water does t

b a horder....thanks. In incorporated Orland Park, I know people there when the water source was the city well, and then they switched to Lake Michigan water via Oak Lawn. Anyway, suddenly the water costs went up and some say the taste went down. Sure, Chicago probably require all wells for any reason to be capped, but I'm just curious to see if even any of the old hand pumps are still hid

Doe anybody know of any still working individual wells within the city of Chicago that might have been part of a small homestead? Or any individual wells at all? Even in close in burbs? Every so often I drive past an old farm house and I see the remains of the old hand pump well, but not any that I can recall in the city. As a kid I used to see a lot more. What brought this to mind was

The name of the move was symbolic, but the houses you are referring to were those moved (I believe) from the 1933 World's Fair to a site in Indiana, along Lake Michigan, where I think they are still there but crumbling to pieces. I think they were supposed to represent the "houses of the future".

I suppose they all bunked it or had trundle beds or the overflow went to the living room. Probably the babies slept in the parent's room. More to the point, what about the bathroom. When I was growing up at least most houses had a "powder room" for relief. Two sisters made for a long wait for the shower, though.

C'mon Holtanken, we all know BG is not haunted, but it's just fun to have fun with. Besides, what other cemetery or place in the Chicago area makes USA Today's most "haunted" places in the US? What in Chicago period makes the top ten list of anything, when most of the Big Media is in NYC or LA? Just think if the Forest Preserve District, or whomever or whatever is the custodia

When I was young, my grandfather used to send me to Root Brother's Hardware, on Michigan Ave., in Roseland. He knew Nate Root during WWII and always insisted I get a "deal" from Nate, because my grandfather was in procurement with the Army Corps of Engineers then, and I guess bought from Root Bro's. Talk about collecting on a "favor" for years and years. :X Anyway.... At

My dad never mentioned what exactly he did there, but I don't think he did any of the actions you mentioned. I think he moved some of the autos. I think he would have elaborated if otherwise.

In the early 80's I worked in the travel industry, and both S&H and TV stamps had grown in the "premium" and "incentive" businesses, so much so that each had their own departments for fulfilling travel awards. I used to visit the S&H location in Hillside, I believe, to try to convince their department to use the supplier I worked for. In fact, the Carlson brand, whi

I believe there was a High Low on Western Ave near 95th Street. I was very young but remember being fascinated with the yellowish "electric eye" that would open and close the doors automatically. Much to my mother's chagrin, I would jump in and out of the line of vision on the "electric eye", opening and closing the door. She usually had to come back out of the store and ge

My father, as a young man, drove a wrecker and responded to this horror. He talked about it every-so-often.

Ever notice the similarity of the old LCM complex to the old Edgewater Beach Hotel?

Hi, a friend of mine is an author, has written one book about Eliot Ness, and we are looking for any old pictures to copy, personal information or, best of all, anybody who actually knew the man, the other men, or even his family. It's a long-shot, I know. Especially if anybody is still this side of the grass who knew Ness or any of the Untouchables, but what the heck? We have pretty much

It's the same. Saw it a long time ago. Forgot what the stone said. It's not a lone grave or a lonely grave, then. ;--> Too bad. It's always interesting to find these things.

I was trying to be kind LOL about the "Cybris" experience. It's probably a long shot that there are any in Chicago proper, as I think these were for those traveling from Chicago. Chicago had hotels. I know there are some on Lincoln Hwy east of Aurora. There used to be one on 159th and LaGrange Road until about 15 years ago. Pep Boys is there now, I believe.

Does anybody know of any in Chicago proper? They might not be separate buildings anymore, even. The only one example that is still functioning as a motel in the area is in Lansing, the Lansing Motel, on Thornton/Lansing Road. Looked them up and I think they are a Cyberis type place. Anybody see any, complete or modified or serving some other purpose?

There is also a lone grave near the grounds of the Oak Forest Hospital, just off of Cicero. I believe there were more graves there and markers but were moved some time ago. One stone remains, flush to the ground.

I did see blue lights and red lights a couple of times in Willow Springs. I used to belong to the Chalet there, and would work out late after work. Unfortunately, when the lights got closer I was terrified to discover that they were not ghosts. Not unless these ghosts had badges and gave out tickets. ;---> The tickets sure didn't disappear until the fine was paid. LOL

Blatz Beer can still be found in the fluid at Tom's in Lemont. According to the owner, the beer is now brewed by Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis. The owner also said that there are only three bars in Illinois that serve it. I do remember seeing a Blatz sign outside a bar somewhere mid-state down-state, but at the time I thought that it was a relic from a bygone time. There is also a bar in LaCr

Those are still around on the Southside, too. They are either used for mail route sorting or to store lunch.
