Does anyone remember Bulow's Hamburgers around 1953-1955 on Pulaski and 83rd street before there were gas stations nearby and before the strip mall. Best hamburgers, with real tomatoes and pickles and lettuce, and great buns.

Can't say I ever heard of it, but looking at www.historicaerials.com/?poi=9875 it sure looks like that club has been there since 1938.

Can anyone recall their times at Vytautas Grove, adjacent to the south side of St. Casimir's ? It is now Marist High, but it was a beautifully wooded Grove back in the day and you could hear the joy there while burying the loved ones. Thank you for responding.

Yes, on the southwest side we had the old man with rags for sale, and we also had the old man with the grinding wheel to sharpen scissors, knives. Seemed like once the snow went away, this was a sign of spring to see him in the middle of the street moving briskly and calling out from side to side each row of houses for attention, it did not happen after the late 1950's though. Thanks for the memor

Somebody refresh my memory on those cabins on the southside of the southwest highway and pulaski? There are tourist cabins still in use on the east side of Rand Road north of Lake Cook. Been there on route 12 for a long time maybe the 1930's.

I was at the grand opening of the HIGH LOW in Hometown, ILLINOIS around 1953. It is still there, and some windows are bricked up and the Advocate doctors building occupies it. They had clowns dressed up at the opening, it was a big event, because the area was a food desert, only other nearby food store was National Tea. Does anyone remember this at 87th and southwest highway??

Just came back from Arlington Height Road and Lake Cook Road, the Buffalo. Still has all the family favorites icecream. Great dinners too. THe old spot on Irving was a hit with waiters who 'memorized' long orders, we used to pile in with ten or twelve of us, and make them sweat it out to 'memorize', did you all do that as well? Too bad it was sold to build a gas station of all things. What a sad d

the most important thing is this fire started the practice of fire drills. in the 1950's and 1960's all the Catholic schools were crowded classrooms, St. Denis on the sw side had up to or over 65 kids per teacher, and it was really important to know the fire exits, which was stressed post tragedy. our family knows a gentleman whose sister died tragically in the fire, but he survived and he is som

Wimpys' was East of State street and a long long counter on the south side of Madison, and you could get a decent meal with a shake for under 80 cents. Of course that was around 1965.

the basement of ABN amro was a wonderful cafeteria which was populated by practically all the employees who worked across the street at 125 south clark. The upstairs was originally actually a restaurant (sit down type) with dark wood furniture, but taking the stairs down, you embarked on a wonderful greeter who led you to the cafeteria which was full of fresh hot coffee, fruit, breakfast foods ahd

Remember that this was a hospital to serve the booming population West of Holy Cross Hospital, visited several occasions, it was very 'cinder block' inside, and bare bones, seemed to serve only doctors who may have been practicing without all the credentials, just my opinion based on a doctor my family used for years

Laredo Lanes was the best. A great date place. A good walk to place, just for the hot dogs. When they were building it, you could still walk past the old Army surplus store near COlumbus and 85th. Across the way, closer to 84th was a great diner with delicious hamburgers. WHat a great bowling alley to spend the Saturdaynight!

Working in the late summer of 1968, near 38thstreet at the now demised Hysan products, was able to actually see the people (police?) standing atop the amphitheater on the now infamous Democratic convention. At least that it how it is remembered. What a huge building the amphitheater was! It was an event gathering place, there were student science fairs held there, even the auto shows, pre-the firs
