From a binder that was being passed around the bus during the 2013 Forgotten Chicago <i>Industrial Might & Architectural Surprises Bus Tour</i>: "...(never)-built 1958 Double-Deck Suspension Bridge & Causeway from 79th Street to Gary." Unfortunately this proposed but never built bridge was not discussed during the tour (was it?) and I haven't been able to find any

http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/locations/st-helens-orphanage/ "The orphanage building, at the far end of the alley, was a false front built for the film. The buildings at the corner where they turn right are still there, but the rest of the buildings along the alley have since been demolished. The interior of the orphanage was a set at Universal Studios, Hollywood."

The 'church' is in fact a false front, built for the movie. I'm sure this information is posted at some other Blues Brothers fansite, but I found out about it from watching this video on youtube that compared movie scenes with contemporary (2011) views--it's worth a look: http://youtu.be/5_SbLi-X8JI

I just watched the movie Fearless Frank (filmed in 1967 Chicago, and currently streaming on Netflix) and I was surprised to see a fight scene set at the top of a wooden roller coaster at Riverview--presumably it was "Bobs, the fear-inducing wooden roller coaster that was almost 90 feet high and reached speeds of 50 miles an hour." I should point out that the movie is very silly/terrib

http://www.areachicago.org/p/issues/peripheral-vision/brownlands/ A semi-recent (2009) article about the site--it goes into a bit of detail about the plans for development there, and why it hasn't happened. Also, people like to have parties there sometimes.

This works too (and you don't need the plugin, the photo files are jpegs): http://ilaerialphotos.com/index.php The images are the same ones in the link provided by pjn345, but they're jpegs so you don't have to deal with .sid plugins. The images are big, too--I made a nice 17" x 22" print of my neighborhood circa 1939 from one of the aerial photos. A good resource.

http://ilaerialphotos.com/photos.php?county=Cook "This project is a hobby to collect and display historical aerial photography of Illinois. Currently, all the photos on here are from a 1938-1941 Aerial Survey of Illinois…(the images) are all jpegs and are LARGE in filesize (some up to 10 MB each)...." If you like historicaerials.com, you'll love this. Or at least like it a lot. A

This may interest some of you: http://chicagoist.com/2011/02/10/found_photos_valley_project_1971_pa_1.php# http://www.flickr.com/photos/vouchey/sets/72157625828492479/ Photos of the now-vacant lots of the "Ogden to Ashland / Roosevelt Road to 15th" area circa 1971 when there were still buildings. Street signs are visible in some of the pictures as are bits of the UIC hospital bu

The book IS available at Amazon now, if you are not into the whole "support your local independent bookseller" thing. I usually am, but I went ahead and ordered it. I've lived in the area since 2000 and I'm always looking to learn more about the 'hood. I'll be sure to bombard you with feedback once I have read it.

I believe you are referring to the power plant/boiler house connected to the CHA Lathrop Homes, which were built in 1937 or 1938 (or so). Interior photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/metroblossom/209851357/ Aerial photo--the power plant is visible in the lower right: http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/6365.html

A flickr user got some photos of the demolition: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9385421@N08/sets/72157623132435000/ That was a neat building, and I wish I got some photos of it before it came down. Sigh...

Thanks for the clarification, and for going through the trouble of looking up/posting the fire insurance map. I think the confusion over the exact address may have thrown some people (like, um, me) off.

Not terribly relevant, but the school-like building at 330 W. Pershing was demolished in early 2009. Some interior photos on flickr, shot by a friend: http://www.flickr.com/photos/statlerhotel/sets/72157600393057593/ Obviously it had been vacant for some time, and it's hard to say what the building was last used for, or if it ever was a school. Neat little building, though.
