I'm restoring a greystone and would like to give it a "classic" exterior. I have been having a hard time finding historical pictures with any greystones in the background to use as a reference. Sadly most of these homes have been changed over the years and it is very rare to see one with original fixtures, doors, etc. Any ideas?

Hey Wayout, are there any remnants of the old Washington Park Track still around? Its amazing how much a landscape can change in a few decades. On another note kudos on the DNA INFO article, its a righteous thing that your doing. After the holidays I will try to contribute a donation.

Based on the map above the intersection in question would have been the northwest corner of camp ground, I am assuming that the street outlined in bold that goes through the Ill. Central tracks is denoting the Elevated line and is 63rd St??

The handrail is also what is throwing me off. I do believe that this was her actual tent/living quarters while on tour. It seems that Buffalo Bill set up his show in proximity to the fair to cash in on the crowds, but was not officially a fair attraction so that might throw a wrench in the Hunters camp theory. I found a map of the show grounds the link is below.

I came across this picture and Ive been trying to match the current day location of where it was taken but I am having a little difficulty as the current street view does not match up with the background in the picture. Anybody have any ideas, I dont think the location that the website lists is exact. Here are the 2 links http://www.whatwasthere.com/browse.aspx#!/ll/41.782846,-87.589224/id/42895/

Yes I remember the Corey Brooks incident, awesome stuff. I love how he mentions that he refused to book Blues musicians underscoring the rivalry that existed between blues and jazz clubs at the time. He also mentions how 43rd St was the only strip on the Southside that was known as a blues alley. The city incorrectly named 47th St as the blues district when historically 47th st was nothing but jaz

Was there a rivalry back then between Cards fans and Bears fans like the Sox and the Cubs? The Cards played here for over 50 yrs so I assume that there were generational fans, did Cardinal fans despise the Bears and vice versa?

Hmm, the building in the 1904 picture looks similiar to the one in the 1909 pic, however there are a few differences between the two. I wonder if the 1904 building was renovated and elongated and is the same one in the 1909 picture.

Theres use to be one on 44th and Western, it had a cannon on the side lawn. I attended a couple wedding receptions there , it was a nice hall not your typical VFW hall. It is now a church.

Yeah def. seems like a stretch seeing as how there were about a dozen other homes between the "Castle" and the intersection in question. Its more likely that the rubble was used as fill to build up the embankment. Still curious though as to how that particular stone ended up there.

I would say that your right about that Richard. Woodlawn was developed for the higher middle class over time it became working class and ultimately a slum. In its heyday Professors, Doctors, Politicians, Entertainment figures all called Woodlawn home. Woodlawn is littered with greystones on double lots and mini mansions much like Bronzeville. A stark contrast to the housing that was developed aro

That makes more sense, the church looked a bit small. So the store used to stand east of the parking lot where the sign is located. You can still see the remnants of the building on street view.

The sign in in the parking lot the side facing the parking lot says "High Low Parking". I'm guessing the church at 953 W. 63rd was the store location. Can anybody verify? https://maps.google.com/maps?biw=1429&bih=970&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.79908130,d.aWw&wrapid=tljp141631844193320&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=953+W+63rd+st,+Chicago,+IL&layer=c&z=17&

The Accadia has been long gone since the 70's I think. On another note The Harper Theater in Hyde Park has gone a complete renovation and brought back to life. It is very small in comparison to the modern theaters but it has a nice small town feel. http://www.harpertheater.com/the-harper-past-present/
