One of the alderman in the area told me last year that it was going to come down in 2013. Subsequently, it turned out the city doesn't have the money to get the job done yet. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130507/roscoe-village/western-belmont-overpass-rumors-of-its-demise-are-slightly-exaggerated It will be a mess when they do take it down, but maybe at the same time they will finall

Speaking of beef joints on West Belmont, I recall another place that was even further west -- near Cumberland on the north side of the street close to the bus turnaround. I believe it was Bob-o-rino's, so possibly an outpost of the place of the same name on Central south of Addison. I could have the name completely wrong, and be partially mixing it up with the Bob-O's on Irving Park Road at about

My dad worked for Rex TV out of a shop on Milwaukee and Devon. Years unknown, but probably sometime around the early 1970s.

I often find that walking around an area brings a completely different awareness vs.driving. So after decades driving around the near northwest side, it struck me like a bolt of lightning while destination walking down Clybourn Avenue ... the Clybourn train station is not anywhere near Clybourn Avenue. The Wikipedia entry for the train station states: "It is called Clybourn because nea

Individual shopping districts in Chicago (and elsewhere, I am sure) had stamps programs, too. For example, Lincoln Square merchants banded together for a stamps program. As a kid, I can remember the family getting orange stamps with old Abe on them at Brumlik Shoes, Abrams Department store, etc.

Lots of information about the park/trail project here: http://www.bloomingdaletrail.org/ On the western end, it connected to the Milwaukee Road main line at the point where the Milwaukee Road West and North lines split near Hamlin Ave -- in fact, if you look at it on Google Maps, you could surmise that the Milwaukee West could have originally been an extension of the Bloomingdale Line, as it

There was also a Rose Records around the corner from the mystery store on Milwaukee, in the basement level of the very unique building at 4821 W. Irving Park Road. <iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=4821+W+Irving+Park+Road&o

In Lincoln Square and North Center: On Lincoln Ave, across from Welles Park was Del Farm, which was later a Vietnam Vets resale/thrift store. Then the building was town down to make way for the Sulzer Regional Library. On Lincoln between Belle Plaine and Warner, west side of the street, a National grocery store. Before the building was torn down to make way for condos, it was a location of t

Here's a postcard that would seem to indicate it was still around in 1970: http://www.digitalpast.org/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/lakecoun004&CISOPTR=5746&CISOBOX=1&REC=4

Don't think that could be the same place, as it supposedly hosted a few concerts as late as 1984. What was on what's now an empty lot at the SE corner of Pulaski & North?

Question about another building near this intersection -- the Empire Ballroom, which hosted a few rock concerts in the 1980s under this name. However, not sure if it was always this name nor if it actually was a ballroom or a converted theater (much like the theater further west at North and Central that was a ballroom/banquet hall up to around 1990). ... I have tried to find it on cinematreasures

The rest of the map is divided into two additional sections, Southeast and Southwest: Let's try this again: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/lib/public/full_screen.html?http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/chi1900/G4104-C6P3-1904-T3-SE/ http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/lib/public/full_screen.html?http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/chi1900/G4104-C6P3-1904-T3-SW/

Interesting note about those tracks at 6600 West ... They at one time connected to a line that ran along what's now Forest Preserve Drive and Sunnyside Avenue. See this map from 1904: http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/lib/public/full_screen.html?http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/maps/chi1900/G4104-C6P3-1904-T3-N/ It looks like this line connected what's familiarly known as the Milwaukee District W

A new deli has opened on the Meyer property on Lincoln Avenue ... It is a completely new two-story building that operates as an outpost of the Polish deli Gene's Sausage Shop near Belmont & Central. The old Meyer sign hangs at the top of the interior staircase to the second floor. In the spring, they are supposed to begin serving food on their outdoor third-floor deck. Not quite the same as
