Pure speculation, but was wondering if anyone might offer thoughts as to the "Wanda" apartment on "North Honore" actually being on one of the N/S streets along the raised tracks between Hubbard and Carroll? The present day street view is of Paulina looking NE from the south side of the raised tracks. But, there are several N/S streets that look much the same along the tracks

I see a photo on Ebay of Old St. Stephens church. This is not the one at 57th and Blackstone, just curious where this one was located. Thanks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1947-4x5-ORIG-NEG-St-Stephens-Church-Chicago-305-/260941293903?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item3cc150294f

This photo is labeled 1951. Any thought as to why the signs are not the standard yellow background/black letters? Thanks! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1951-Press-Photo-Misleading-Street-Sign-Chicago-/260919853462?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item3cc0090196

The 1960 phone directory shows a Julia's restuarant (owners Julia and Ben Pocius) at 4656 S. Western. There was a Jule's restaurant listed at 814 W. 71st. The 1967 directory still shows Julia's restaurant, but Jule's is gone

The Do Stop Inn was at 1159 W. 51st. The Baby Doll Polka Club was at 7315 S. Western. This is from a 1960 phone directory. The 1967 phone directory does not list the Do Stop Inn, but still lists the Baby Doll at the same location. I didn't find anything for a Kelley's or Kelly's in the area. The Dog House is listed in the 1960 directory at 1540 W. 63rd. No Dog House listed in the 1967 directory

A 1955 Chicago Tribune article talks about a benefit in August where baseball games will be played on the little league diamond at Lawrence and Cumberland. In the same article they mention a girls baseball team, the "Norrettes." Might this be the team and location you refer to? Interestingly, I don't see a baseball field in that location in the 1951 or 1962 view on historical aerials.

BTW Berwyn Frank, love that photo of your dad and was so sorry to hear the house was demolished.

Amazing story about that firehouse. I looked it up on Chicago Tribune historical and the August 14, 1965 story says a Miss Daisy May Williams, 23, was killed by the truck. Was the photo taken right after the accident?

I remember Bishop's well, used to work at Hastings and Leavitt in high school. But I did not know of the Drewry's plant there!

SuperCFL, thanks for the information! I've had some luck finding some photos of the signs in place, the most recent on the FC facebook page, taken at 61st and Cicero. One of the best photos of the sign was from my wife's friend's facebook page. A photo of her when she was young and there is the sign! Interestngly, this sign has the CTA aluminum overlay over the CSL raised logo. ctasign by

Okay, I found it! The Midwest Cafe is listing as "Midwest Lunch" and was located at 2053 W. 35th. The building directly across the street is where Sheehans was located (or whatever the name is). This is the six corner intersection of Hoyne, 35th and Archer. The Midwest Lunch building is gone; the streetview jumps when you go east on 35th, so this is the best view we can see of the buildi

One thing I considered was that this tavern is not necessarily "Sh" eehan's. I don't see a definitive "Sh" in the name, so could be something else. When I get some time will check that too.

There was a Sheehan Tavern on South Wentworth, but the buildings have been demolished. Also, the address isn't near a six-corner intersection. I've found no other references (phone books or Tribune historical), so I'm wondering if the photo is from another city, too.

Not Chicago proper, but in Udina IL (just Northwest of Elgin) on Route 20 is what appears to be a tourist cabin/motel. There is a main house with buildings surrounding the west and north side. Hidden in the bushes out front is the old neon sign that is faded and the neon is gone.

I checked a bit in the Chicago Tribune historical. The earliest reference I found on Old Town was in June, 1949, when the paper discussed something in the "Old Town Triangle." I found earlier references to old town businesses, etc., but not located in the area known as old town.

These photos are a great source. When I was looking for examples of the Chicago Surface Lines Bus Stop sign I have (posted months ago) I looked through every single photo and found one from the Central Avenue 85 Route. I've tried to figure out where the photo was taken but it has proved so far to be impossible.

I can't point to an actual episode, but shots looking south down Racine and a bit west show those still-standing buildings.

There is a much better segment where the camera was right near Superior and Racine looking SE and shows the whole superior side of the building sans windows.

A couple questions gglow... Do you recall any filming at the station?... or when they demolished it? The shooting down Superior was looking east...which apartment was your grandmother in? Where was your family's demolished building? Interesting side note. I noticed that the filming of the outside of the station looking southeast (the building on the SE corner of Superior and Racine) sh

Spent some time digging in old yellow pages up to 1960, found nothing. This includes listings for banks, loan companies (various types), credit reporting companies, credit unions and savings and loan companies. Any further information would help!

Going out of town for a few days, but did a quick search....didn't find much. July 1, 1923 Chicago Tribune article shows this as the residence (2nd floor I presume) of the Frank Huber family whose 8 year olf daughter was kidnapped by a "moron." It's an interesting story; a mob of 200 at Halsted and North were screaming to lynch the guy, and three cops were trying to hold the crowd at

Something is confusing. We know it was a gas staion until around 1962. We know it was a store around 1965. If I am interpreting the historic aerials correctly, the square/rectangle structure was replaced after 1973. So, why would there be an old gas station sign in front of Terry's in 1988? What I'm saying is we have a gas station, then a store, then a gas station, then a store. Perhaps with t

It appears on Historic Aerials that there was a square/rectangle structure there up to 1973 and sometime between 1973 and 1988 the structure changed, with the new structure having an angled west wall. Some information from older phone books. Certainly have some holes here, but perhaps a start... 1950, 1960 and 1962 phone books list the 1554 N. Larrabee location as the North & Ogden Servi

Just learned of this lone grave site in Elgin where the Channing cemetery used to be... One marked grave remains in Channing today. Located in the far southeast corner, it is the grave of William Hackman, an Elgin National Watch Company employee, who died 28 February 1885. The EAHS held a re-dedication ceremony at the grave site in September 1971. Here is a link to photos of the old cemeter

A few months ago I took a stroll around the Essanay Studios building on Argyle. In the alley to the west of the building I noted this old manhole cover from the Chicago Telephone Company, which changed to Illinois Bell in 1920. I thought these had disappeared years ago so was quite happy to see one still in use. I'll bet most people visit the old studio without noticing this other great piece of C
