Edgar Branch interview Farrell in the 50's and gave the real names of just about every character in the Studs Lonigan trilogy as well as photos of all the places. I went out in the late 90's and photographed all the ones that were still standing. I'm a huge Farrell fan and as great as Studs Lonigan is, I sometimes think the 5 Danny O'Neill books may be even better.

Went past it hundreds of times in my life,but now I can't seem to find a photo of it online, so I was wondering if anyone had information or memories of it. In 1987 they still had 600 union employees, and I know that trains loaded up shipments right out back of the structure. For the life of me I can't remember how many stories high it was. Ringbauer's had a banquet hall and a tavern a short distance from each other. I can look up the address, but the banquet hall was at the SE corner of 51st-Ashland, probably like 5159. They had another tavern at the NE corner of 53rd-Justine (5301 S Justine) It was a mosque last I saw of it. Ringbauer's were from St Augustine parish at 50th-Laflin.

Less than 50 years ago in the Back of the Yards, in the area between 45th and 53rd and from Throop to Seeley (less than a mile square) we had 11 Catholic churches and a convent where mass was said. Not to mention a 13th just out side those boundaries.

Does anyone remember a huge set of RR tracks that crossed South Western Avenue somewhere between 74th and 87th. There may have been as many as 20 sets of tracks along with a small tower. Think they were around till maybe 1964 or 1965. Might have been just north of 79th St. For some reason, no one I talk to remembers them

I think the final nail in the coffin for the Rebels as a street gang, was the incident where a group of them beat up 2 Chicago cops at the Gage Park Bowl. That really brought down the heat on them.
