This is another angle in the 50s. I think it's Ashland avenue on the left, Ogden Avenue on the right and Madison in the background. Or is it Madison on the left, Ashland on the right or Ogden in back? The link goes to Calumet 412.

I have to disagree with those that think only elites fly. I've known several blue collar guys that owned and flew airplanes. When I was a kid it was a thrill to go to 12 street beach and watch the small planes fly in and out. There used to be a helicopter service that flew from Midway to Meigs to O'Hare. I once used that service in 1972, It cost $10 one way. I think it was more elitist (and s

The Illinois Railway museum hauls out their streetcars yearly. I think around 4th of July weekend. I only remember riding a streetcar once, the Western Avenue Green Hornet, Christmas time 1955. The IRM has a working Green Hornet at the museum. They also have an original el station from somewhere in Cicero. It still smells the same. What was that aroma? Tar? They also have the older streetcars, A

In the August 11 1963 Chicago Tribune Magazine, there is an article of a bookseller trying to save the neighborhood at Ogden, Madison, and Ashland. There are photos of the area taken from the upper floors of the Wendell building. (Referred to as the Flatiron Building.) The online photos are high contrast and hard to see details. The area was fairly dense and lively back then. Chicago Tribune,Oc

There is an article dated Jan 5, 1936, page B10, in the Chicago Tribune regarding Goldblatt's purchase of the 26th street store from Leader Department store. There is a large photo of the store with the article. At the time the store was only 3 stories and a basement. The building was constructed in 1929 at a cost of $1,350,000.00. Also of note, Christiana was known as Turner Avenue at this date.

It was at 2110 Prairie, I don't know the new address. I was there last October showing an out of town guest the sites. This old house was still at it's original location, surrounded by empty lots. People took a chance ,saved and restored the area. Even the old Marshall Field jr. mansion, that sat boarded up for years, has been spiffed up and sold as condos. I'm not against commercial developm

Anyone familiar with Prairie avenue will probably know the Harriet Rees house at 2110 Prairie. For many years it sat alone , one of the few originals left in the area. In recent years the area has been built up ,with new townhouses replicating the past. Of course with all the rebuilding here and McCormack Place the developers came sniffing around ,putting the house in jeopardy of being torn do

One Sunday possibly in the sixties,I saw a game show hosted by Don McNeil. I don't remember the premise or the station, but I think they were trying to launch it nation wide. They weren't successful. Other local memories "It's Academic" WMAQ Saturday evenings. Local high schools competed in A College bowl type game show. It was broadcast from the Merchandise Mart. "Passage

Check your local libraries for DVD; "And this is free the life and times of Chicago's legendary Maxwell Street" It is a 50 minute documentary filmed in 1965. Almost every Chicagoland library seems to have a copy.

I also remember the 26th street store. For a discount house It had an a real variety of different departments. First floor men's clothes, a tobacco shop, a fairly large candy department plus ,I think, a food department. There was an annex ,between the first and second floor,on the east side of the building that had a men's barber and a ladies beauty salon. Second floor, women's clothe
