Wonder if the Chicago History Museum or Newberry Library might have a photo of Eli Bates, if one exists. And BTW, he donated the money (40K) for the Abraham Lincoln: The Man (aka Standing Lincoln) statue in Lincoln Park, unveiled in 1887. First memory for this baby boomer is the Toman Branch Library located at 28th (ish) and Pulaski. The building I remember is gone, but I distinctly remember it "smelled" like a library. We walked there from more than a few blocks away. Hope kids are walking to the new library.
