Nice article about the old Humboldt Park line here. link I also find it ironic how they talk about extending the Eisenhower branch of the blue line west, maybe to Mannheim? link They really should have found a way to keep at least the Cook county part of the CA&E. Maybe the old Westchester branch too?

The place at Belmont & Cicero was called Don's grill. I believe the sign said "humburgers". There was another one by 19th & Western.

You have to have the pics online somewhere and link to them. Some use flickr or photobucket. Note the flickr pool on the main page.

I remember reading somewhere years back that the city would broadcast an ultrasonic "beep" every so often for the signals to stay synchronized. Is this still true?

I too remember Forest Prserve dr being 2 lanes. I also remember before they widened it and put in the curve west of Cumberland. Friday night and sometimes Saturday night were drag racing nights on FPD west of Cumberland. This was when FPD met Belmont just east of the river. It was not uncommon for a car to take the turn at Belmont too fast and end up in the river. I'm convinced this is why they pu

I did some more digging and found this.link Its mainly about the old Westchester branch but read all of it. There IS a reference to the CA&E using the dearborn subway and storing cars on the stub of the Humboldt park line. The issue with the old wooden cars is addressed as well.

Jeff_Weiner "Well, that would have required keeping the NW Met Branch elevated structure and tracks in service, as well as Evergreen Jubction, and probably pointed to using an EB ramp at Loomis Junction to get the CA&E downtown. That might have been better, since a third track could have been reinstalled on the Lake Street L as an express track for the CA&E." I don't see

I read somewhere (can't find it now...) that the CTA was considering keeping a mile or so of the old Humboldt Park line for the CA&E to store trains on between rush hours.

Ever since I can remember, the speed limit on Belmont between Overhill and Cumberland has been 35 mph. I noticed last week it's been lowered to 30 mph, there are signs on every block. On the eastbound side in River Grove the limit has changed too. As a lifelong resident of the area, I'm suspicious of this. Could a speed camera be next? At night, especialy on weekends, people flat out FLY down

I do appreciate the replies. My wife is from the Joliet area and didn't know any of this stuff. When I first told her about this, she probably thought I was nuts. This wouldn't be the first time... (:P)

I believe you're right, thanks for the reply. After I read your reply, I realized there are similar boxes on Cumberland around Irving Pk rd. Cumberland has sprinklers in the median. I pass these going to work.... Thanks again!

Hi all, I've been noticing these things on the n side of Peterson between Lawndale and Pulaski. They're on the parkway, maybe one per block. Does anyone know what they are?

Maybe red wan't the exact term I should have used, it was more pink-ish. I did find a pic that shows just a sliver of this on the right side. This isn't the best pic but it's the only one I found.

Does anyone remember this, say back in the 60's? This popped into my head out of nowhere but I remember this on the Kennedy. I am also wondering what the purpose of this might have been.

I remember Landsmans drugs at Belmont & Overhill on the Elmwood Park side of the street. This was a good size store with lots of stuff. Then there was Pauls pharmacy at Belmont & Opal. Pauls was smaller but had the soda fountain, the old wooden phone booths w/the fans, and a large selection of comic books. We'd go in and have a Coke or maybe a Green River and he'd tell us not to read the c

Took a drive yesterday tracing this old rail line. The Lake Shore branch ran pretty much right next to old C&NW line, now the Union Pacific north Metra line. My question is why would they build right next to another line? I also noticed a similar thing with the old CA&E out west. Does anyone know why they did this?

There's an oddly shaped house at the above address, it's been there since the 60's. I've heard several different stories about it, one was it was a contest prize. Does anyone know the real story about this house?

I believe the building by North & Cicero made either cookware or cutlery.

I remember Aldens, they had a warehouse and outlet store at Roosevelt & Cicero as Chitownjim mentioned. I went there numerous times during the early 70's. I don't remember what happened to them though.

I don't know if they still exist but I remember a Don's grill. Their sign said they had "humburgers". One was on Cicero just south of Belmont on the east side of the street. There was another one on Western just south of 18th, again on the east side of the street.

Querencia and the rest are exactly right.I grew up in a 997 sq ft 3 bedroom georgian w/1 bath. It was built in 1948, these houses are common in the area. One bedroom was very small, maybe 9 X 7? My parents ended up having 7 kids. My younger brother and I shared the small bedroom, we had 2 rollaway beds arranged in an "L" shape. I had to fold the end of mine up to access the closet. My 3

Does anyone have info on this former company? I'm asking as my grandfather worked there years ago. Google found some old catalogs on Ebay, the one I bought is from the 40's. They were at 849-855 Washington Blvd. A catalog from the 60'showed them at 500 N Orleans. Thanks!
