From looking at it on Google Earth, it could have been a piece of unincorporated Cook Co built on its own, then annexed? Some of the houses look pre WW2, not the standard brick city homes Parts of Norridge and Harwood Harwood Hts. have section with 1920's era homes in little clusters. EDIT: Checked an old map from 1940 and the Golf Course is till there, but Argyle runs into it. Still look

I am glad it didn't get torn down! I used to drive by it a lot in the80's, when it was a bit worn out. Worried it was going to get leveled.

St. Peter Canisius school was at around 5500 west North Av in North Austin. The church is now closed, and original school closed maybe 15 years ago? In 1960, they built an annex at Lavergne and North for Grade 1-3, where I went 1967-70. Now long gone, part of shopping area at Cicero and North. Most of lot was old CTA repair shop.

Daley the first wanted to close Midway, and build the "Airport in the Lake". After he died, then Bilandic and Byrne helped get MDW back to business.

Speaking of dealer owners as pichmen, Al Piemonte hasn't been in any recent ads. Used to have an Al ad on their website. Now, it's his son pitching sales, whom I met once.

There was one alley at North and Narraganestt in Galewood. Also, there still is one at 5700 w Irving Park Rd past Central Av. I checked Goodle earth and it is there. I wrongly assumed was gone. 76 Lanes on North av in Northlake is now a WalMart/Sam's Club.

I'm just going my my memory, but the Big Top sign is a reused Red Barn one. It has the same shape as other Red Barn pic in craigslostchicago site. They added a 'tent top'. Also, there is a "silo" still next to the Big Top's building. I am thinking they removed the top 'barn' roof, which would be empty space. But, it's just by memory of driving past it back then. Someone with a 196

In unincorporated parts of Du Page, and in Streamwood, it's still called "IP Blvd." Within city, 'Blvd' means no trucks, hence why it's now a 'road'. Not so outside city.

Howard Pontiac is now Howard Buick/GMC and no more 'Mom' stickers on the cars, or any signage. Aiming for a more modern upscale customer, not 'Big Blow outs' of cheap Grand Ams. Schmerler Ford became Roasch Ford and moved to Bensenville. Building in Elk Grove now sells fork lifts and industrial equipment. But, Schmerler's hey day was the era of Ford Country Squire wagons with fake wood trim.

On Higgins, near Foster is an old building of "The Red Barn" hamburger chain. Now called 'Big Top' family restaurant. The old 'Red Barn' sign was remodeled to look like a circus tent.

The facility was named after the community area. Some forget. I grew up near there. When my brother came home for a visit and saw the then new 'Dunning Shopping Center' in 1989, he laughed and thought it was funny. "How could they name it afer the ..?" But reminded him the area is called Dunning, out to Cumberland Av.

In the late 70's, CH. 44 showed 1960's/early 70's shows like "Get Smart" and "Room 222". To me in HS, was a nice alternative to overplayed kiddie reruns like "Brady Bunch" and "Gilligans Island"

Overpass was built in mid-late 50's I think. Only 10 or so years later, the park it was built for, closed. It's planned to get torn down.

22nd street runs further in DuPage. It merges into Butterfield Rd, but then starts up again at Meyers Rd and runs in Lombard, past Yorktown Mall. Then, continues off and on into Glen Ellyn, near Collage of DuPage. So, more likely DuPage County didn't want to bother changing name, than just Oak Brook. 22nd was once a major route before expressways. In old maps, it was once a State highway. I

Some subrubs still call 4000w 'Crawford' instead of Pulaski. Also strange is Oak Brook doesn't use 'Cermak Rd', but 22nd St. Whats the attachment to a numbered st? There is still a Pine St in Austin area, around 5500 w, between Lake and North av. Other oddities are side streets not conforming to starting with L-P, west of Pulaski. Like Parkside, Lowell, Tripp, and Rutherford. Maybe were n

The Midway Airport Terminal is now on the site of that old Community store. By the mid 70's, Community at Harlem and Leland was threadbare. I was in HS and we'd make fun of it as a trashy store.

It's still called HIP, on signs too. In 1979 when Brickyard's enclosed mall opened, HIP was old news. But, they fought back and eventully won. Having Carson's take over Wieboldt as the anchor store helped, since Wards died and JC Penny is sinking. Adding Target, Best Buy, and Kohls also enhanced it. See, not all malls are 'dead'.

It's one of a few gas station sites now built back into conrner busines buildings. Before the mid 70's gas shortages, lots of corner building got torn down for gas station, such as the Buffalo Ice Cream shop. Although, some sites are now a Wag's or CVS. There were more stations, since cars broke down more often. Dead batteries, flat tires were commonplace.

At first, when we moved into our 2 br house, it was just my bro and I in the front br. After my sister was born, for awhile it was us 3 in same br, until she was one y/o. Then our back sunroom was converted to a bedroom with its own heater for me and bro. Then we had another brother and sister in 3 years. That's when we moved to a two story, 4 br, house. Sharing a bathroom was "norm
