Southern burbs have changed 4000 w to Pulaski, though, maybe since there are more Polish-Americans living there?

1974 was a record year with over 1000 murders. But, they were not as many drive bys or stray bullets. Population was still over 3 million, so per capita was about the same, .

In another thread about TB Sanitarium, FC member "shekaago" posted "In The Directory of The Public Schools of the City of Chicago 1905 - 1906 ... it lists Belding Branch 2 located at "N. Fortieth av., 1/4 block south of Peterson av." So, Pulaski was called Crawford for shorter time then it seems. If in 1905 was still 40th, when did Crawford come in? And when did change

The west side N-S streets were once numbered, as they still are in Cicero. But were called Avenues, so 40th Av would be Crawford/Pulaski.

I remember them too, on the Ike, but they were resurfaced with blacktop. For exit/entrance lanes. Last red ones I saw were on the US 20 bypass X-Way in Elgin, which is like a trip back in time to old X-ways. I think gone now.

The Rt. 83 right of way was put in places as a WPA project in the Depression. There are still some Art Deco bridges along it in Elmhurst. It was the 'bypass' around Chicago back then.

Chicago also almost was in Wisconsin, but then new state of IL wanted Lake MI access. IL's bicentennial is coming soon, in 2018!

I call Waukegan Rd. when I'm up in Lake County, "Harlem", since its IL 43, and Milwaukee Av is up there too.

44th Court should be one of the K streets. N-S grid numbered streets are named in city limits. Kostner is 4400 w, and 44th ct. would be 4432 w.

I miss buying whole albums. but don't miss guessing what they sounded like until got it home. Or, waiting to hear other hits on the radio to see if it was worth buying.

My hobby since I was a kid is finding Chicago grid streets out in the boonies. Most of the areas in collar counties are based on State/Madison, even DeKalb Co.

I lived there in the 60's, and those houses were new, compared to the mostly 1920's bungalows and 2 flats. Part of the CTA Bus Barn was developed into these newer houses with driveways. Houses are still nicely kept.

Bryn Mawr pops up again in Itasca and Schaumburg, in industrial or older residential areas. Along with Ardmore, Hollywood, and Devon. Thorndale is most commonly known continuation street up that way.

Studebaker closed its South Bend plant in 1963, and then completely shut down car business in 1966. Only remnant of the old company still around is STP Auto Products.

The SW side of city was similar, empty lots with a few 20's bungalows and apt buildings. Streets and sidewalks laid out, already. Too bad city didn't annex more land in the 40's, thinking "no one will ever move that far". Could have gotten Bedford Park, Burbank, and other thriving commercial areas.

The 2345 w IP Road Jeep store was last called Albrecht Jeep, and they had a Chrysler Corp issued Jeep sign in the late 80's, after Chrysler bought Jeep, until mid 90's.

The artist's conception is too trendy, and will be "out" with next generation of yuppies. If they keep original, it will be more timeless.

Six Flags-Great America killed most of them off, especially Old Chicago. But, also, smaller portable carnivals, now seen in parking lots, took the low end. Kiddieland in Melrose Park would still be around, if not for the family squabbles of the owners.

Hoskins Chevy is out in Elk Grove these days. Also, Sullivan Pontiac was in Arlington Hts on Dundee Rd, and is now Sullivan Buick-GMC. The old stand alone Jeep(R) dealer at Irving and Claremont just got torn down. Was a repair shop its last decade, specializing in Jeep products

Fifth Ave used to be called "Colorado Ave". The businesses there asked for rename to be after NYC's 'Fifth' to promote the area. It's not part of the grid system. i.e. not '500 s'

Turn Style sold some sites to Venture, before Jewel Co. closed chain. Others, like Harlem/Foster were made into larger Jewel/Osco stores.

In 1959, Austin was a solid middle class area, and some parts were upper classes. So, a motel close to the IKE X-way was not out of character. The Shamrock Motel at Cicero and Roosevelt was another.

I've always wondered why those prime corners at Harlem and Bryn Mawr were vacant. Checked Historic Aerials and they have been vacant since the 1930s. I used to think because of the X-way that they were so.

In Du Page Co, there used to be theaters in most of the little downtowns, near train stations. Now, only York in Elmhurst, Tivoli in Downers Grove, and Glen in Glen Ellyn. Lombard's Du Page was torn down and still empty lot. Even Naperville's Naper is closed. I would have hoped Naperville having a thriving downtown could support it. Also, Wheaton and Villa Park shows are closed.

Google maps shows it clear. I'm willing to bet the homeowners like it and would not want it changed. As a barrier to short cutters flying through residential areas. At this point in time, why bother paying the $?

Per the 1956 Trib article, it was a tiny unincorporated piece of Cook Co. Only .4 square miles. Funny part of article is 'city expected to grow more in future' meaning adding more land. Not by much, it turned out.
