Kelley, I know it was on the west side- same side as the tower. The fountain is on the east side. It was a store that had upscale woman's fashions and accessories Perhaps someone with a 50's phone book can track it down. Thanks! Nancy

HI Tim. He lived a good life at Lincoln Park Zoo, died in 1951 and now resides at the Field Museum. http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/unknown-chicago/2010/01/rip-bushman-1-1-19.html My family visited him many times as he was the 'rock star' of the zoo. I believe he had some temper tantrums a time or two but he was always gentle and curious about the visitors when we visited. Nancy

Well, I have made a Big Mistake here, folks. I initially thought that it was the New Parkway- but- Kelley sent me a great list of Chicago places(retail-restaurants etc,) and there on the list was the stables I really went to. All the facts above are absolutely correct except that it was the Ambassador Stables. I may have started at the New Parkway and then switched over when Arthur Konyot came

Kelley, The other night I was trying to think of the name of the department store on Michigan that my favorite cousin loved. It was Bonwit Teller. I tried to find a picture so am glad that you uncovered one!We would occasionally have lunch at Rickarts(Spelling?) near the Tower. Does anyone know of another department store near there on Michigan Avenue in the 40's or 50's? I seem to remember one ne

Does anyone remember the uptown area around Carmen and Broadway? Carmen and Clark? I lived there between 1936 and 1951. It was a great neighborhood- very diverse. ON the corner of Carmen and Broadway was the 5100 Club where Danny Thomas was just starting out. The Bachman HOuse, on Carmen, built by Bruce Goff constantly attracted visitors due to its radical design. We thought it had been buil

Thanks,Kchi, I remember when my cousin worked there- about 1954-56 It was when the Thunderbird came out. There were always 'looky loos' who came in to admire the red convertible on the floor. I got to ride in it and -boy- what a great experience. People's heads turned as we passed them by. It was one hot car-lol! Thanks again for looking it up! Nancy

I am coming into this discussion late but, better late.... I lived on Carmen- between Broadway and Clark- close to Foster Avenue and Ashland. We had a large Swedish population in that neighborhood. The Swedish deli was wonderful, there was a moving company on Clark named- Soderstroms or something similar and a Swedish restaurant someplace close by called the Smorgasbord. Many of my classmates at

The Maller's building on Wabash and Madison has an interesting history. During the 30's it was ( and still may be) the central location of the jewelers in Chicago. It had wholesale jewelers, manufacturing jewelers and some retail stores as well. The building had an old elevator with the folding metal gates on each floor. ON the sixth floor, I believe was Ehrens or Arrons's( spelling may be off)

There was a Ford Dealer on the North side named, I think, Tauber Ford or something similar to that. My cousin worked there for a time. THey might have had two dealerships. Perhaps someone will remember where they both were. Nancy

I don't remember when the rides closed- but, around 1944 or so, when I was 8, the ponies were being kept at the New Parkway stables. My father thought it would be fun for me to have a ride and so lifted me up and the ride began in the pen. Somehow, the pony got spooked and fled out of the pen and made a fast beeline for the stables. He not only reached the stables in record time but actually wen

There was also a Davidson's bakery on Argyle just off Broadway. Anybody remember that one? The window always had delicious goodies- I especially remember the strawberry shortcakes- real cake not biscuits- in the late Spring.I loved that bakery! Nancy

Hi Kelley, Thanks so much for taking the time do find the answer. It was indeed the New Parkway Stables! I took lessons and rode there as a child. It was a wonderful place and the rides through the park were glorious. Such a shame that urbanization claimed that space. It was bugging me that the name had disappeared someplace in my mind even though it meant so much to me during the years I was the

Hi, Does anyone remember the name of the riding stable that was located near Clark and Webster? It was extremely popular in the 40's and 50's. Many of Chicago's elite boarded their hoses there and there were many horse shows held there each year. There was an entry into the park and every Sunday morning there would be breakfast rides by riders who would be in formal dress as they trotted aroun
