The oilcloth smell comment brought back a memory, instantly. One that had been dormant for many many years. Funny how our brains work.

Frankly, everyone I've met in person from this forum, as well as all the FC staff, are really great people that share a common interest. And on a hot summer day such as this one, I wouldn't mind having a cold one with any of them. I hope to meet more of you as time goes on.

I seem to remember some sort of trouble ( food poisoning?) with Jack in the Box. They still exist but not in this area. Too much competition? Dunno. Here's a straight dope thread on the subject. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=372280

There is an article with photos on the Municipal Device right here. In fact, it's referenced in the link Fleurblue provided a few notes north of here. http://forgottenchicago.com/articles/the-municipal-device/

More info on the Archer theater: http://cinematreasures.org/theater/7151/ It was closed in 1950 so I wouldn't have seen it on my bus rides in the 60s. More info on the Midwest: http://cinematreasures.org/theater/2724/ Thinking a bit about this, there sure are a lot of ex-theaters in Chicago and probably other cities as well. Remember the days when you could walk to see a movie, usu

Thanks for the links Rob. Our family made a trek to the free fair every year. Looking back on those times, I remember having fun at the fair with my brother, sister and cousins. And it was quite large, at least from a kid's view of the world. It was a "closer" Riverview for us although we made an annual journey to Western and Belmont. That was fun too. Forgot to mention, if the b

Not sure about the 50s but I don't think there was a theater (aka show) on Archer and Western. Lindy's and McKinley Park, yes. Theater ??? I did take the Archer bus to and from high school in the early 60s and I know there wasn't a theater at that intersection back then. Brighton was, as you say, just a bit west of there.

I recently heard about an area in Rogers Park called The Jungle. I found a few things via a Google search then wondered what I could learn here. I have since found a 1991 reference to a Juneway Terrace, which apparently was translated to the less civil name mentioned. Does anyone have first hand experience with this area? I understand the implication of the name and I'm not trying to &qu

Frank - WOW (again) The address on the clock, 3817 W. 26th in your last post on page 5 of this thread reminded me of a hobby shop that was close to the Leber Jeweler store. The name of the hobby shop -- Linka's. It was on the north side of 26th and close to the Atlantic (as we called it) show. My brother and I took many a trip there back in the 50s. I remember it being small but it was

Let me add that this is one of the best, if not THE best, sites I visit on a regular basis. I've met some of the people that contribute here, Frank being one of them, and hope to meet more of you as time marches on. The staff that run FC are a great bunch of people with a passion for all things Chicago. I try to make the FC events as best I can and look forward to them. I've learned a lot

A very interesting site: http://hiddentruths.northwestern.edu/ There is more material here than first meets the eye. The more you dig, the more nuggets you will discover.

On page 2 of this thread, there are pictures of several homes on the 1900 south block of Avers, including the one up for sale a few notes north of here. Wonder why that block is so much different than others in North Lawndale?

During the FC Pilsen tour last year, we heard a similar "under the sidewalk" story. I recall my mom and dad using that phrase every once in awhile. We lived in one of those below grade Pilsen houses until I was 6 years old. I recall hearing that certain beverages were kept under the sidewalk during the prohibition era. I don't think it was apple juice.

Received the Chicago River history book yesterday. Can't put it down. Only through the first few chapters but I've already learned things about the river I never knew. In a nutshell, no river -- no Chicago. Gotta go, more reading to do.

There are many well researched and written articles right here on the FC site. I've spent many an hour reading through most all of them. Kudos to the FC crew.
