The read count on this thread has shot up over 1000 views in a week, I am sure it is linked somewhere. Could one the visitors tell me what site this thread is linked on? Just curious. I will be adding some neat additions to this thread in a week or so. I have a tour scheduled to visit the interior of a VERY neat building in North Lawndale. Stay tuned!

Just a bit of info here, I am currently reading Mike Royko's 1971 book Boss about Richard J. Daley. In one of the chapters Royko explains how the Italian neighborhood around Halsted & Taylor was razed to make way for UIC's expansion. He refers to that neighborhood as "The Valley." Were there two Valleys?

Here is a mystery some friends of mine and myself have been working on at Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery. A woman submitted this photo to us and wondered what it was. She comes from a Bohemian family that lived in the "Merigold" section of North Lawndale that I describe in the first post of this thread. After some digging we were able to unravel the mystery. Here are Kacena's

Here is a VERY bad photo of an ancient house at 1334 S. Karlov. Since I am an outsider, there were just to many people outside for me to stop and get out. I have always kept my eye on this house. The exterior is a literal time capsule. I would LOVE to see what the inside looks like. Here is a Cook County Assessor shot of it.

I noticed that this thread has the second most views on this site with the ghost stories thread in first place! So with that said I want to keep it going with more on North Lawndale..... I took a few pictures the other day and thought this was kind of neat. When you look at some of the businesses in North Lawndale one might think they were on the Mississippi Delta. There are a few bait and t

Those were from around 2000. Golf Mill changed hands a couple of times since then. The guy Stu in the commercial is actually a real person named Stu that worked in the dealers service department, then was later the aftersale manager in the sales department.

VERY COOL Bruce! I KNEW I remembered seeing another view of that building. The one you posted looks like it may be a slightly later view. The signs on Zenk's Hotel look newer and crisper in the image I posted. When was yours postmarked?

I was just looking through frworksonpapers flicker images that came from his book. This reminded me just how amazing his book is on C.R. Childs. If you don't have one please do yourself a favor and contact him through this site and buy a copy. The amount of painstaking work that went into physically and digitaly restoring these images, and the research they did on the buildings, is pretty impre

Wow, VERY cool stuff. The show was based at Central Park (3600 W.) & Roosevelt in North Lawndale. My father who is 60 grew up on R & B, Motown, & Soul. He grew up on the west side and went to Farragut High School which was 90% black at that time. This where I get my eclectic music tastes. Papa was all soul and mama was rock & roll!

That is one of the coolest looking signs left in Chicago! Here is what the old showroom looked like. The top image is of the lot across the street on the east side of Western just north of Glenlake.

"The author Norbert Blei, in his book "Neighborhood" depicts his experiences as a young man growing up in the Pilsen area (now Little Village). He speaks of the many bakeries; Czech, Bohemian, Polish, etc. which filled the area. He tells of conversations with the owners of some of the bakeries. He has memories of doing the bakery shopping every Saturday morning and coming home w
