My husband and I had our wedding reception at Zum Deutschen Eck and I'm so sad that it is now gone. A few German places like Dinkel's Bakery and the Chicago Brauhaus still exist on Lincoln Ave. Laschet's Restaurant is a nice place on Irving just west of Lincoln and Edelweiss Restaurant is located way, way, WAY out on Irving west of Harlem. The following link from the Goethe Institute has a listing

Thanks, Artista! It's kind of a nice display, though not a very detailed history of HIP.

Wonderful photo! My mother used to take me shopping at "6 Corners" back in the late '60s, early '70s. We used to take a break from shopping at this little pizza place that I can not, for the life of me, remember the name of. The entrance was off of Irving a few doors down from the 6 Corners intersection. There was a "U" or "S" shaped counter and customers sat on stool

I remember all those things you guys have mentioned! Last time I was shopping there (back in December) there was a nice wall display on the history of the HIP. Don't know if it is still there but it was located on the wall at one of the main-floor entry hallways at about the middle of the mall.

I've always wondered about this bridge as I pass by it quite frequently. Thanks for the info! Would be great if the city could do something constructive with all the old abandoned rail lines and corridors.

Oops! After re-reading your post, the tracks I think you are referring to ran down Paulina. This track was used by the L trains that ran from Logan Square to the Loop before the Dearborn Subway was built. A section of the old track now known as the "Paulina Connector" is being used again on the Pink Line.

Those overhead tracks had lead to a now-demolished, above ground Logan Square station. The present track alignment heads underground from just north of the California Blue Line station and now the Logan Square station is underground. The history of the electric "L" lines in Chicago is quite fasciniating! A great site to check out is www.Chicago-L.org. And the Chicago History Museum hosts

I remember the old HIP. It was all outdoors and there was parking on the roof! My doctor's office was located at the Walgreens end of the plaza. My girlfriend worked as a waitress at Walgreens when they had a coffee shop sort of restaurant inside. I remember Walgreen's also having a basement where goods were brought up to the main floor via a manual conveyor belt. Weird memory but... Oh well! I us

This is such a wonderful site.... Every post I read is bringing back memories! Yes, my father and I would rake leaves and put them into a sort of metal trash can with holes in it and burn the dried and fallen leaves. (I still have this "holey can" in my basement!) I also remember the cement trash bins facing the alley that almost every yard had in my neighborhood (NW side). There is stil

Yes! I skated there in the late 70's when I was in High School. It was a great place and I have so many fond memories. Saw many a movie at the Norridge Theater next door and also ate my share of Maurice Lenell cookies. Great, great memories!

Does anyone remember Stop N Shop, Steinberg Baum, Community, Turn Style and Zayre stores? My grandmother would take me shopping to these places when I was a kid. We'd also go to Goldblatt's and to eat at the Tartain Tray restaurant inside of Wieboldt's on State St. It's a shame these places are gone. Times are a' changin'...
