Lead paint is still allowed for exterior uses under certain restricted circumstances, such as metal windows, iirc. Can't remember the actual verbage/wording of the statutes, but it's very rare nonetheless.

Knob & tube? In Chicago? Not much of that. I just ground all the lead paint off my steel windows... I'm sure the EPA would have had a fit if I was a contractor.

Almost sounds like she remarried and didn't change her name somewhere (or common law marriage, more common than people realize) or something along those lines.

The tracks were exposed on Lake Park heading south from 56th Street this morning for ADA curb & crossing work. Quite a lot of scrap metal that the city could be selling to help pay for the pension short fall they didn't pay when they should have (oh, did I just say that?).

Nope, as far as I know all data center/server farm. It would have pretty shitty views looking out on the back of McPlace and the CN tracks. I mean, of course, the RR Donnelly (sp) building at Cermak. I think a big reason for it was the floor structure was built for presses which are very heavy and it has a huge floor plate which would make residential conversion difficult without cutting in a ligh

I believe that Tiger Tanaka had one in Tokyo as it was too dangerous for him to walk the streets of Tokyo. My dad hated the "fee" for having a safe car. One of the reasons he didn't have a car for many years.

56th Street at Harper is getting new curbs as we speak - have been looking for evidence of tracks, etc, but nothing so far...

Thanks for the link to Robert Anderson - I like his commercial art quite a lot. My parents (and a lot of other people in HP-K of their generation) have paintings by a local woman named Hubby (can't remember her first name, might have been Ruth) who usually painted women or birds in three's with shedding layers. She went "nuts" later (I think committed) - don't know exactly what, brea

Did "outside privy" mean outhouse/earth closet/other or a non-in-unit water closet? I was thinking that was somewhat surprising, in comparison to UK standards*, but then again, Chicago was on a, or just beginning a, building boom at that time. *They were ahead in WC provision per dwelling unit, but not inside/indoor plumbing, especially bathrooms. One thing to keep in mind when doing research is that the Department of Buildings microfilm records were destroyed in a fire in like '59 (could have been a bit earlier or later) so many records are gone or incomplete. The Art Institute also has a lot of useful and interesting documentation, though sometimes only accessible by visiting the library itself.

Yeah, they are still open. The elevators are still manually operated. It IS going back in time in some ways. There IS a guy who does somewhat similar stuff, though rather more Hopperesque through amber lenses (well, more orange). I think there is another who does something related.
