A bit more info on Kaufman's from a story in the Tribune in 1981 when the stores were lining up a unnamed buyer (I found no further mention in the Trib archives of who bought them) Founded 1921, located 2775 N Milwaukee by late 40s. Originally menswear, ladies apparel added later, by the time of the movie to Kimball & Diversey (circa 1949) strictly women's wear.

Margie's is still owned by her family. There's a second Margie's on Montrose right by the el tracks. I worked at Bargain Town one Christmas-people were animals. It got so bad that we would just yell "Coming through!" and haul the flatbeds full of stock out of the back regardless of where people were standing. They wouldn't move otherwise.

It's from 1962 but the Mattel Vac-U-Form was pretty cool. It molded plastic sheets into various things. When you plugged it in the lights in the room dimmed. As I recall it was about the size of a car battery and weighed almost as much.

The tv show Shameless filmed there not too long ago. I was surprised to see it pop up as a filming location on one of the episodes-it didn't look that far gone. The Rosenwald & Marshall Field apartments were, if memory serves, privately financed experiments in low-income housing, paid for by wealthy businessmen.
