6 tiny houses in Maywood

I was looking for the Bertrand Goldberg homes that were supposed to have been built in Maywood. I didn't find them but I found these instead. They are on the corner of Legion & Orchard, a block east of 1st av and a block south of Madison. They face away from the street facing the walkway between them, there are 2 rows of 3. According to the real estate listing, these houses are 400 sq ft although one clearly has an addition. The listing says they were built in 1940.

I have searched the net profusely and can't find any info on these homes. Does anyone know anything about them?

Those are cute.

There used to be a National guard armory with a Tank battalion right next to there.

Those were probably shoehorned in for officers quarters.

Good detective work! These homes are very intriguing.

My initial thought is they are not Standard homes for the following reasons:

1) At least in Melrose Park, these homes were staggered on their lots to break up the monotony of homes in the same position on their lots

2) The floor plans of the Standard Homes in Melrose Park featured offset doors and front windows with set close to the corners

3) The roofs of the Melrose Park homes were simple pitched designs

If anyone learns more more about these homes, please let us know!

Really cool!

The Wikipedia entry for Maywood mentions 1940 as the date when the 33rd Tank Company of the Illinois National Guard became Company B of the 192nd Tank Battalion.
The former armory is visible via Google Street View at the SE corner of Madison at Greenwood.

The 192nd got sent to the Philipines and onto Bataan just in in time to join the death march.

I was working on the house in Northlake so I took a drive past these houses on my way back. They really are tiny. They are the size of a garage.

I was also struck by the number of beautiful old courtyard apartment buildings out there, that are just boarded up and vacant.

On the way back I passed this fine Jens Jensen building, the Hotel Guyon, on Pulaski and Washington, completely abandoned and open to the elements.

All in all, the trip back was pretty depressing.

I checked historicaerials.com. They weren't there in 1938 but were there in 1951.
