Hi,
My grandparents owned an apartment building on Winona duringthe 30's.
His name was Joseph Weisz married to Mary Weisz. I know they also lived on Carmen Avenue but think that building has been torn down.I'd love to find the Winona address as I'm coming to Chicago next month and it would be wonderful to see that building. My parents lived at 1230 Caarmen when I was born and then moved to 1258 Winona( Harry Weisz) but I don't think the grandparents lived in either of those buildings.
I would really appreciate any information!
Thanks,
Nancy

Coupling into what PKDickman offered...

1932 Chicago directory...

Harry Weisz, 1230 W. Carmen

Joseph Weisz, taylor, 4945 N. Winthrop

Joseph Weisz, residence, 1258 W. Winona

If you would like information from subsequent directories, just post.

OH my gosh!
PKDickman and Rustymuscle.
Big hugs and bouquets of thanks to you!
The 1430 Winona is new to me. I wonder if my grandfather owned two buildings- but I don't remember anything about it-
Interesting that he is at 1258 Winona and 4945 Winthrop. Could there be 2 Joseph Weisz's? Both married to a Mary? Unless the Winthrop address was his tailor shop. I remember it on Broadway but perhaps he moved it in the 40's. It could also be the residence of my aunt and uncle- William(Bill) and Frances Gordon. I'll check the 1940 census to see if they show up there

Fascinating what turns up in your family history!
This means so much to me. NOw I can visit each of the buildings and re-connect with my Chicago roots.
Again, thanks so much to you both!!
Nancy

The 1430-32 building is a six flat. The '29 Polk shows them as the owners and residents.
The 1258 is a ten unit building and the Polk does not show an owner living there.
It is quite possible that they owned both at the same time.
They might have downsized their holdings after the crash in '29, a lot of people had to.

So, PK,
In 1932 Joseph Weisz was only at 1258 Winona, my father Harry was at 1230 Carmen and they were both at 1258 Winona after 1934.The year my parents married. Makes sense! The 4945 Winthrop must have been his shop. Google shows it as a residence but perhaps he worked out of one of the apartments.

It's really interesting as I had no idea about buying and selling of all those buildings as most of our family rented apartments.

I wonder if it was easier to buy an apartment building back then?

Ah, well, the questions you did not think to ask come back as little mysteries never to be solved.

Thanks again!
Cheers,
Nancy
