Above link worked fine for me a few minutes ago. Interesting site.

I remember the A/C on the trolleys. I think they were called "220s". Pull up 2 windows and go 20 miles per hour. :-)

I recall the Western Electric plant. It was named Hawthorne Works. It was huge and employed thousands for decades. They had a gym and park facility a few blocks west of Cicero Ave. on Cermak. I think the Cicero town hall now occupies that space.

A mall now sits on the SE corner of Cicero and Cermak.

We're starting to drift off topic. Perhaps a new Western Electric thread can be created and notes from this thread moved there. I think we'd need a moderator to make this happen.

The trolleycoach website will come in quite handy on days when work is slow!

By the way, is it my imagination or are the front doors to St. Columbkille really close to the street?

there is sidewalk separating the steps from the curb, but your right, it doesn't look like much clearance. I had a discussion once about this area with a relative who was very familiar with the area back in the day, and he said that way back when, you hardly saw a car a Grand Ave. Not much traffic. He said that often during the winter, the trucks would clear the streets for the streetcars and just push the snow off to the side, leaving the streets impassible for cars. So one possible explanation for the tight entrance to the church might be that, for most of the churches existence, there weren't many cars going by so it didnt matter

I came across this fantastic photo of a funeral (for the mother of Archbishop Sheil) at St. Columbkille's, 1936:

To WayOutWardell --
My Aunt Jane O'Neill is in the picture of the "Class of 1931." Aunt Jane lived
at 536 N. Hermitage all of her life. It was a surprise to see her in that picture!
