Processed Lake Michigan water is moderately hard, so that's not surprising. I guess they reformulated Ivory, because it doesn't do that any more.

Which reminds me. Anyone remember Sweetheart Soap. Those ovoid bars were hard as rocks, and seemed to go on forever, until they suddenly became chips. My mother always bought that brand until they stopped making it.

Jeff,
You are correct about Ivory the soap that floats.

I still have a bar from each soap made in 1940.

Swan states on the front of the bar "Pure white" "Floating Soap"

and Ivory states on the back of the bar the same statement. Ivory was made by P&G and Swan Lever Bros. I collect some antiques.
