Here's another picture for you of the building at night. The building was built around 1916 per CityNews.

You mention the Standard Oil building on 13th Street. Could you mean the Standard Oil Building at 910 S. Michigan Avenue? It was the HQ of Standard Oil before they built the Amoco Building on East Randolph. On August 10, 1926, it was the site of a famous mob shootout between Hymie Weiss and Schemer Drucci against some Capone mobsters. At that time, the building held the offices of the Metropolitan Sanitary Commission, and Weiss and Drucci were going over to visit some politically connected types that worked there.

No Dunning1, it is the Standard Oil Co. building at 2223-2225 W. 13th St. It is etched in limestone above the door. Check out the Google view.

Not sure, my guess is something related to the Medical District. Its nice to see at least one of the buildings from this old, gone neighborhood survive.

Whatever this building was or going to be is a mystery to me. I didn't find anything on this building. Nothing under historic buildings, nothing in the Chicago Tribune archives or even on Google.

On the Sanborn Fire Map - Chicago 1905-1951 vol.7, 1917, Sheet 98 - it shows that Standard Oil occupied nearly that whole parcel of land from the tracks, north to 13th Street and between Leavitt and S. Irving (now called Hamilton).

Thanks, Chistorian51! I also found, on Google Street View, a ghost sign on the side of the building on Leavitt, just south of 13th.

Nice find! More interesting stuff on the area, I heard this story a while back about the long demolished firehouse at 13th and Oakley that housed fire engine 107. Anybody know anything abou this?

How interesting! I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of the "handprint story" until now. :-)

In the Polk Directory, per 1929 it shows at this addresses, "Standard Oil Co filling sta".
