Belmont & Kedzie before the Kennedy?

This intersection is under the Kennedy, what was there before? It's one of few major intersections covered by an X-way.

tomcat go to http://www.historicaerials.com at search imagery hit "by lat-long"
at lat type 41.9393 at long type -87.7076 you will then see the Kedzie and Belmont.
hit 1938 button. If you want to see where the Kennedy runs over today hit "overlays" on the drop down hit "all roads". It looks like there used to be a lot of homes and several large buildings along Avondale ave. With the C&NW rail road.

Oh, my bad! I wish I had first hand accounts but that's a little before my time! LOL!
But it would be cool if someone could chime in, and share some memories of when the express ways where put in.
