New Cicero/Berwyn Tour & Final Shoreline Motel Article!

Nearly a year after it began, Forgotten Chicago is proud to conclude our Shoreline Motel series with our fourth and final article. Our final installment takes us from Hyde Park to the South Shore community, exploring four little-known motels, three of which are now demolished.

Featuring over 35 photos, many not seen in decades, this article also examines two lakefront hotels – the Shoreland and the original 1973 McCormick Inn. The Shoreland is an example of a once-grand 1920s hotel that fell into decline, eventually becoming a university dormitory, and is now being refurbished by one of Chicago’s most buzzed-about architects. FC’s focus in this article, however, is on the utterly unknown first remodeling of the Shoreland by the talented and forgotten James Eppenstein, the subject of an upcoming FC article.

We also have information and pictures on what was one of the shortest-lived major buildings in Chicago in recent decades – the 750-room McCormick Inn, completed in 1973 and demolished 20 years later. Curiously, the architect who designed Chicago’s the second Shoreline Motel also designed this little-remembered tower.

Another first for Forgotten Chicago – details for our inaugural Cicero/Berwyn walking tour have just been posted! These fascinating communities offer a unique and remarkably intact built environment, epic ethnic and industrial history, and one of the most intact old-school restaurants in the area.

As a special bonus, we will be given an in-depth interior tour of Klas, a Czech restaurant in continuous operation for over 90 years, and one of the true dining landmarks of Chicagoland. This tour is on Sunday, July 28 at Noon with convenient starting and ending points near the CTA Pink Line.

We expect this tour to sell out quickly, so if interested, get your ticket soon at http://forgottenchicago.com/events/july-28-ciceroberwyn-walking-tour/.
