It occurred to me that people new to the North Side in the past ten years might not know what was there not so very long ago. 1) The point of land where Sheridan and Broadway come together near Montrose now has condos, but until the 1990's had a church with a beautiful rose window. 2) The big Target at N Broadway and Sunnyside was the site of a CTA train-repair facility dating 'way back; the floors were soaked with creosote so when this place burned down in the '90s it REALLY burned---from tall buildings in the area you could see flames leaping out the big arched windows. 3) Rainbo Condos (N Clark just north of Lawrence) was the site of the Rainbo Roller Skating Rink (which earlier than that, 100 years ago, was the Rainbo Gardens beer garden). 4) The Asian strip mall on N Broadway across from Uptown Post Office was the site of a big car dealership that burned during bitter cold winter weather---the firemen literally had icicles hanging from their hats.
