More Vintage Ogden Ave...1965

I know much has been discussed concerning Ogden Avenue here, but I couldn't pass up posting this pix I discovered in my book collection. It continually amazes how dramatically the dismantling of Ogden Ave changed the landscape of the near north side. This is the intersection of Weed St and Ogden in 1965...the CTA brown line is overhead. The current site of this photo is a youth baseball field.

The caption below this photo reads.."They help cool gang violence...1965..street workers take their message to gangs. Turf wars had lessened by the mid 60's"

I was looking in google maps and the pitchers mound is almost right where the streets crossed. Very, very cool! It looks like Weed St ended at Ogden or at N. Larrabee St.

That is a fantastic photo. Gang members wearing Cuban heel boots sure seems a strange concept these days...

from historic aerial views, Weed ended at Larrabee. This pix looks like its a view north, with the guys standing on the NW corner of Weed and Ogden. A 62' view shows what looks like a hamburger stand (....chman's) on the east side of Ogden almost directly under the L tracks. The guy leaning up against that cement post is probably a support post for fencing around the brush under and next to the L tracks. (brush that still looks like it exists today)

the dramatic shadows cast from the three guys standing suggests the street lamp overhead, car headlights approaching from North Ave, moving south on Ogden, or maybe from what was a very brightly lit intersection of North/Ogden/Larrabee.

a 73' view shows Ogden Ave in place, but an 88' view shows Ogden gone and the ball field in place. So, in the course of the 15 yr span, the entire area was practically cleared out, except for the "EL"...

Older Ogden from the Cushman collection. Ogden at Halsted, looking north east. shame it isn't looking southeast so we could see the 1958 skyline.

In my opinion, Ogden was tore out to keep "them" out of Old Town/Lincoln Park. Grew up in city and know all about turf wars and segregation.

Now, at least barriers are slowly coming down.
