You see a lot of that in "Msquad" where the background people in the scene are watching the filming. Since they didn't have permits, they couldn't move people out of the area and move people out of their businesses.

I have a theory (though I can't be positive) that some of the locations used for MSquad were abandoned and earmarked for demolition to make way for the X-pressway.
It's possible the Superior and Racine building was abandoned from 1957-1960 when they filmed MSquad, and that it wasn't even a police station. I can't find any reference to a police station at Superior and Racine prior to 1960.

That is an interesting theory captain, it is plausible that building was abandoned and ready for demolition. I would assume most of the buildings in that area had been bought or gone though eminent domain by then. That building does look like a police station especially sine it had 2 garage doors, a lot of the old police stations had two bays, one for a patrol car and one for an ambulance. But of course it could have been some type of factory or other commercial building.

It did take a few years to build the Northwest/Kennedy Expessway, for a 1960 opening, so that theory is on target.

The only major highway I remember under construction vividly is I-355, and many buildings sat a 2-3 years before demolition.

The Division Street Riots did take place in July, 1966. It seems incredible to believe now, but at the same time, riots were taking place near Roosevelt and Racine following police closure of a fire hydrant on a hot day, and at the very same time, the Richard Speck manhunt was going on.

I'm enjoying reading about the filming of M-squad in Chicago and what parts of the city looked like back in the 50s.

But I gotta admit, the show itself "stinks" IMO. YMMV.

the show provides a rare glimpse, literally hundreds of views of what Chicago looked like 50 or so years ago....and what the north side looked like pre-Kennedy Expressway...captured on film for posterity...pretty valuable footage considering how now, 50 yrs later, most of the parts of Chicago that gave it character and made it a real city are vanishing or vanished.

I agree the show is somewhat weak, but it's tough to develop anything in 30 minutes. Most of my viewing pleasure (aside from seeing lots of stars in their first roles) is the footage of Chicago. As Captain mentioned, I find it quite valuable footage.

BTW, while many scenes are of the near north side and the loop, there are instances of footage shot outside the loop and near north area. The farthest shot north I've identified is at Clark and Catalpa (5500 North). The farthest shot south I've ID'd is around 7400 S. South Avenue. And then there are some locations I cannot figure out at all. If anyone has information about some of the film locations would love to hear.

Here is a partial list of the locations I've identified..

Michigan and Wacker
Michigan and lower Wacker
Michigan between Ohio and Wacker
Michigan and Oak
Wacker and Lake
lower Wacker and Lake
Overpass at Fulton and Halsted
numerous locations along LSD to Hollywood
Huron and State
Chicago and Rush
numerous locations along Randolph
LaSalle between Washington and Madison, with the view of the old Stock Exchange
Rush Street between chicago and division
Ukrainian Village, Thomas and Leavitt
Randolph and Wacker and the old Gunthorp Warren printing plant
Riccardo's at Kinzie and Rush
Skid Row, Madison street, various locations

thanks for jogging my memory...from what I remember, in 66' a Puerto Rican fellow was shot and killed by police at Damen/Division, which sparked outrage from the Puerto Rican community, who were already ticked off about being pushed out of their neighborhoods further east and closer to the lake.

Captain, my apologies for not being able to offer the episode title of the location shot at Catalpa and Clark. The episode (going from memory here) is the one where in the beginning a guy in a drug store station wagon witnesses a shooting. The witness is followed and killed inside the drug store.

The drug store is "Gordon's Drug" which was at 5501 N. Clark. A couple of very nice exterior shots were done there including Lee Marvin walking through the side entrance. Kinda funny, the building is still there as is the drug store, now called, "Gordonos."

I'm almost positive the Gordon's Drug store location was used in a couple of drug store related episodes...possibly "the Watchdog" (where a bad guy needs medicine for rabies) and "the Outsider" (where bad guys try to kill a lady by tainting her insulin)

this Madison Ave skid row footage was used in a couple of episodes..there was a feature recently in New City about the chronology of how Skid Row has vanished..there was mention of how the old flophouses had "fantasy" names .. note the name of the "King's Paradise" establishment....there was also another called the "Starr Hotel"
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/20205384@N03/4922610404/" title="MSquad Skidrow 1959 chicago by captain54_01, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4922610404_5b80eb1dfb_b.jpg" width="1024" height="767" alt="MSquad Skidrow 1959 chicago" /></a>

Here's what looks to be a rare far southside location that RustyMuscle was referring to..7400 S South Chicago Ave, view south.. with "South Shore Laundry" in the background..the corner tavern far in the distance is now "Lee's Unleaded Blues"..and the auto/truck junkyards to the right still remain today..

I think I just saw that episode on you tube it's called "the vanishing lady"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaOsNhSGYoE
It's in 4 parts I think it was in part 2 or 3.
So far it's the only episode I've seen, I need to watch more.

Edit it first appears in part 2 min 4:17

Captain, the Racine Street police station (as it was known) figures prominently in some of Nelson Algren's fiction, in particular the short story "Bottle of Milk for Mother" (1946, I believe) which takes place almost entirely in the station and includes descriptions of the neighborhood sounds (St. John Cantius' bells, streetcars passing) as heard by a young kid who hears them from a cell in the station. I found the location (with much difficulty) a few years ago by searching Tribune archives. I was glad to see the photograph posted here because I had never seen one before.

thanks for that info...I remember reading that a long long time ago, never really being able to figure out what or where the Racine Station was.

In "the captain has bad dreams"...the "captain" is a police officer who is haunted by visions and memories of the daily lineup of thiefs, drunks and tramps
through the "station"...I know Algren drew a lot of his material by hanging out in police stations, and I often wondered if "the captain has bad dreams" was written about the Racine Station

as posted on this site, there are a couple of still standing adandoned police stations which seem to be exact duplicates of the Racine/Superior station, down to the "patrol" and "ambulance" signs etched in stone above the garage entrances.
one is at Chicago and Laramie and the pix here is of the 23rd and Damen station

Purely speculation, but I suppose this would have been the first show about cops & criminals to be filmed in locations filled with real cops and criminals. Skid Row was a great location for obvious reasons (the Starr Hotel is where Speck holed up and tried to kill himself in '66) and Division/Western was Panczko Brothers territory.

One of my disappointments with M Squad is the location filming is pretty much B roll stuff. In fact, I've noticed a couple episodes (not back lot filming) where the "location" was somewhere around LA (the hills/mountains in the background were the giveaway). Not really complaining, but would have been nice to have seen the approach they took with the series, Naked City.

On a side note, I was fortunate (?) to actually visit the Starr Hotel just before it was demolished.

Captain, thanks for the photo of the 22nd/Damen station and the Algren quote. I grew up near the Chicago/Laramie police station and my relatives ran a tavern a block from the 23rd/Damen station back in the 1st half of the 20th century.

By the way, the house used for Eliot Ness' house in the 1987 Brian DePalma "Untouchables" film (at least some of the exterior shots) was on 22nd Pl. just west of Damen, just west of the station. You can see the twin spires of St. Paul's church in the background of a few scenes.

I came across one interesting vintage Chicago panorama in this episode, which happens to be the next to the last episode produced...

@ 4:47 - 5:11...toward the end

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qaB1LTIJ108?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qaB1LTIJ108?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I've narrowed down this location to either Halsted/Fulton overpass, DesPlaines/Fulton overpass, or maybe even old Milwaukee avenue overpass @ fulton

I'd love to compare that view of the 1959 skyline to the present, and also to identify the two taller buildings in the background @4:47

Captain,

Quite sure that scene is about 800 W. Chicago, maybe a bit east of Halsted. The two tall white buildings are the old Montgomery Ward buildings. Here is a present day...

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=800+w.+chicago+avenune,+chicago&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=31.509065,56.513672&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=800+W+Chicago+Ave,+Chicago,+Cook,+Illinois+60642&amp;ll=41.896703,-87.64781&amp;spn=0.003274,0.013797&amp;t=h&amp;z=14&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=41.896433,-87.646432&amp;panoid=oKO8oZjIyo2Lco_pNXTAeA&amp;cbp=12,88.87,,1,-5.15&amp;output=svembed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&amp;source=embed&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=800+w.+chicago+avenune,+chicago&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=31.509065,56.513672&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=800+W+Chicago+Ave,+Chicago,+Cook,+Illinois+60642&amp;ll=41.896703,-87.64781&amp;spn=0.003274,0.013797&amp;t=h&amp;z=14&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=41.896433,-87.646432&amp;panoid=oKO8oZjIyo2Lco_pNXTAeA&amp;cbp=12,88.87,,1,-5.15" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

So, he's walking west on Chicago, then turns southeast and the camera then faces the loop from approximately just east of Halsted. Here is an approximate...

that's pretty impressive .. I would have never gotten that location....I thank you

what threw me was the view of a building that looks like the Merchandise Mart @ about 4:58, directly under Ballingers profile.... I'm quite sure that's the Mart..and who would have thought you could see the Mart from Chicago and Halsted...just proves how barren and spacious that area was back then
