Does anyone know the history of what happened to Gladys Restaurant at 4527 South Indiana? I hear that it has been closed for a few years. Who owns the building now? Why did it close?

I looked it up on "live search" and if it's the one story building it is still there but it looked closed. When did you go to Glady's?

Try this link:

It was originally at 4541 Indiana in the basement and moved to the 4527 Indiana location in 1966, per a former employee I have been in contact with. It was open 24hrs and never served alcohol. Apparently it was famous in its day.

Try this if you want a connection to the luncheonette:

A great picture. I myself never ate there but we had that type of resturant in other areas of the city. There was one on east 79th street run by two old ladies and the food was fabulous and that was back in the 60's also.

I've heard several different stories in reference to the closing of Glady's; I know she turned ownership over to a friend of her's many years ago (in the eighties), the Chicago Public School Teacher tried to retain the business, but changing times prevented her from doing so, the closing was due primarily to higher cost and fewer patrons. The food was always good, the staff friendly and the clientele was that of famous people and locals. Yes I ate there every other Sunday and sometimes during the week.

I worked at Michael Reese Hospital in the nineties and used to eat at Gladys's frequently with my friend, Dr Willie Wilson (who is now running for Mayor of Chicago, BTW).
He introduced me to Ms Gladys and I spoke with her many times.
Unfortunately, she became quite ill and died.

The restaurant was sold to a very nice woman in her thirties (I met her but sorry, can not remember her name). The business had been closed for a while when she took over and struggled to get it back to where it was.

It failed some time later and no one ever tried again to reopen it.
