Ethnic foods in the 50's 60's

I'm Polish and Slovak and grew up in the Back of the Yards.

Does anyone remember Pig tails, pig snooths, pig knuckles, beef tongue, golash, pea soup, beet soup, sauerkraut soup, pigs in the blanket, peryogies,
blood soup, potato pancakes, liver sausage, liver and onions, head cheese, etc.
Just to name a few of our favorite foods back then.

Carmech,

Czarnina is a good one. They served that in Polish restraunts.

Add pigs feet to my list. Don't forget chicken and dumplings. Our nuns at St Michaels made dumplings that were as hard as league balls. LOL

Nothing was like the home made food my grandmothers used to make: szekelygulash (goulash with sauerkraut), home made apple and poppy strudel, homemade spaetzle, thick soups....nobody worried about cholesterol back in those days!

We grew up with bacon grease and lard in a bowl on the stove. Tasted good on rye bread and then add alittle limburger cheese and what a smell, but great taste.

Czarnina (blood soup) was my father-in-law's favorite at Syrena's on 47th St. Also beef tongue.

In the family, there's a dish they called "Polski"; polish sausage, sauerkraut and pork & beans. And Aunt Jean's Surprise, a kugeli or potato casserole, from what I gather.

One great place I forgot to mention earlier is Daisy Brand (Crawford Sausage Co.) I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago, so I was really not too familiar with Daisy Brand products until I attended a cookout with some friends in the southwest suburbs. Someone commented that the hot dogs were good, but they weren't Daisy Brand. When I eventually saw some of these at the Butera's at Cumberland and Montrose, I bought them, and I have to agree that they are the best hot dogs I have ever had. Since their availability at Butera was somewhat sporadic, I started going directly to the factory store on Pulaski and buying ten pounds or so at a shot and freezing them. What I did not realize, however, is that the also offer a whole series of cold cuts and meats that are very Bohemian that I have never heard of. One, buchta, is kind of a much spicier meat loaf, and its wonderful in a hot sandwich on rye bread. Another treat I discovered is cream sausage. They also have jatrinice and other Bohemian goodies. You have to try this place, it's at about 2300 S. Pulaski Road. Open on Saturday until about noon or so.

When I was a young accountant, I was staffed at a job on 50th & Halsted. We would go to Syrena's for lunch, and as a courtesy, I would buy some czarnina for my father-in-law.

There was always the debate...would I drive, and someone else would need to hold the soup, or would I be a passenger, and hold the "bloody' stuff myself?

Got a lot of free rides that way.

And, by the way, (from previous post)it was "Aunt Jean's Special", not Surprise.

My folks would go to Syrena's. The good old days and the good old favorite foods. Keep the memories coming! Beef tongue came in two flavors Ha! Ha! Does anyone know?

My Polish grandmother who lived in Bridgeport on Lyman St.
baked home made bread and home made Czarnina.
One treat was lard on the bread sprinkled with salt, was that good.
My other Polish grandmother made poppyeseed Kalachkis.
