By way of update, the book in question (which has plenty of cool Chicago history stuff mixed into it) is in stores now - http://www.adamselzer.com/creeps.html

For about a month or two there has been a lister selling negatives on Ebay. Most of the negatives are of Chicago scenes. Several are related to the Grimes killings and in fact, two of the photos are of Patricia and Barbara's nude bodies lying in the ravine. One photo is shot facing west; one photo is shot facing east. I would post them, but they are very clear photos.

Related, I'm not much for ghost stories, but in fact experienced a ghost light about 40 years ago around 91st and Madison. It was blue, about 3 inches in diameter and came within about three feet of my girl friend and I.

I just read the story at your link, it was a very intresting read. It's a shame that it is still unsolved. I had never heard of these or the Schuessler-Peterson murders, they were before my time. Is the sub-division on Graystone Ct where the old house used to stand? I wonder if the people that live there now have had any
strange things going on. The Schuessler-Peterson boys hung around my old hood on W Montrose.

Hi,

There is a subdivision there now, but I don't remember what it is called. None of those houses are built right on the site of that house, but on is close. One day of I get enough time, I'll go downtown and pull the plat book on that property to try and figure out what the story was with that house.

Re the house on German Church Road. Apparently the wood gate to the driveway is still there with a chain on it. If you use Google maps you can actually use street view to go just a little west of the site where they were found and see the gate to the drive. The foundation is still there. There are several sites online that show pics of the gate.

That's the wrong house. Your speaking of the one on the corner of GCR and County Line. The "ghost" house was east of the crime scene. Everything is gone from it. Ill get an aerial photo showing it later.

I've been looking for pictures of the house online, but all I can find was pictures that seem to be the gate by County Line Rd. It looks like a lot of people have got the wrong place. this is the gate by County Line Rd:

This is the gate someone posted:

Looks the same to me, they have a pic of a outhouse looking structure.

Ya, that's the wrong property. I assume the little outhouse type structure you speak of was that stone grotto in the back. It was a little smoke house. People still lived in that house when I was a kid. The white fence around the property was for their horses. The house I speak of was west of the ravine.

This is the "outhouse"

On some other web site they said it might be a pool pump room but who knows, they all where on the wrong property!

I went to grade school at Trinity Lutheran and that is what put me in close proximity of the vacant house. That white wooden fence was around the property of a family who owned horses and I can still remember seeing the horses in the 1970's. It was occupied in the 80's GCR and County Line it ain't. I sat in that stone grotto with my buddy hoping the owners of the place would see us. it was far enough in the woods to be out of sight of the main house however.

I was at the actual "ghost house" twice. The lead reporter of the Desplaines Valley News is a good friend of mine, and he was there too. He went inside of the place a number of times before it burned, and told me that the house has sparsely furnished. Whoever lived there took what they could and left the others. There was a couch in the front room and some other pieces. If I remember correctly, he has images of the place. I bet that house was vacated because of delinquent taxes.

I saw a spook there I thought but now thinking back, there surely was someone occupying the place. Perhaps a squatter. That was quite common in this area. However, I am not the only one that saw odd things there. I have a Chicago Police friend who I met later in life who had been there as a teenager because of the rumors, and he saw some anomalies.

Look at these. You can see that he property at County Line Rd and GCR was surely occupied as early as 1988. Those people had a horse barn there and they were horse owners. I remember seeing a girl riding a horse on the property once when I passed by - in fact I seem to recall that she may have even went to my grade school. She was younger than me.

Whoever wrote this as is seen here: http://www.ghostplace.com/forum/ghost_hunting-38475.html has a nice story but the ghost house they show is wrong.

Bruce,
There was a property along there, I thought it was right at County Line Rd, where the people had llamas. I remember seeing them every day when I was driving home from work. This would have been between 1991-93. Would that have been just west of the property in question? I seem to remember seeing a house - sort of a ranch style set back from the road and down, probably along the ravine. It didn't seem occupied at that time and it's gone now. I never paid much attention then as I originally had thought the Grimes site was closer to Wolf Rd, not County Line until I found out on here I've been wrong all these years.

Bruce and Bwalsh

Do I understand right, that you feel the gate is not the correct site of the old house? I used google map to use street view and the gate pictured is just west of devils creek on the north side of GCR. It sure appears to be in the correct place to me.

You know, now that you mention it, I do remember llamas. Perhaps that was what stuck in my head, but I can't say for sure that it was the corner tract but it must have been. The lot across the street (on the other corner S/E) had horses too. In fact someone had cows down a bit further south on County Line road not that long ago. I bet that land was unincorporated until recently because I can't believe a municipality would allow animals like that in the village limits. I also bet the ghost house was unincorporated because vacant houses don't usually last long in local municipalities. In any case, the property with the white fence, as I stated, was occupied until at least 15 years ago.

Yes also, as I indicated above, the ghost house was set back off GCR on the east side of the ravine and could not be seen when the trees were in full bloom. It may have been noticeable in the winter and fall, but I don't remember. With going to grade school at Trinity, I was always around people who had lived in that area for decades. They are the ones that told the story of the abandoned house, and of course my friend (who lived in the subdivision north of Trinity Church) and I had to go and investigate. Of course he had gone there many more times than I did. I'll never forget that car in the garage. There was a small tool room inside the garage and the darned tools were still in it! Not anything big but wrenches and boxes of screws etc. Then there was an open door that led to the basement, and it was totally dark. I mean you could see nothing! I did not dare walk in there. This was the second time I went to the house - after it had burned. The first time I was there when the house was still up, I walked up to the bay window peeked in and could see very little, when I backed off a bit, that is when the ghost face peered around the frame of the window from inside and stared at me. I left running like I had never ran before. I didn't stop until I was halfway into the old Bridewell farm property. Surely that must have been a squatter I saw trying to scare some kids.

That fire must have been put out real fast when it burned because I recall some of the walls still being there and the toilet was still attached to the bathroom floor. I would NOT go into the basement. I went there a third time I recall after someone tried to torch it a second time and the car was undamaged by fire but the vandals got to it and busted the windshield. The driveway entrance at GCR was secured only with a chain across it. The drive was gravel.

Looking at the corner lot again in the photo above from 1988, that rectangular dark spot with the sidewalk around it just south of the driveway was a cement pond or a tennis court. I don't recall seeing a swimming pool there. I may be wrong.

Bruce

Looking at those Photobucket images, that odd shaped "outhouse" shack looks like a well house.

Thanks for posting the historic aerials Bruce, that cleared up a lot. The sub-division on Graystone Ct is were the ghost used to be, I just thought the ghost house was closer to the road, but it was way back. It looks like one of the houses is almost in the same spot as the old house:

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;ll=41.739481,-87.911632&amp;spn=0.002802,0.00456&amp;z=17&amp;output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;ll=41.739481,-87.911632&amp;spn=0.002802,0.00456&amp;z=17&amp;source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

The house to the left of, the one right behind the pound is fairly close to where the ghost house was. As a matter of fact that looks like the same pound from the historic pic.

If you look in the image at the lower left hand corner of my montage you can see my swipe I did between years. You are correct on the house, and the pond seems to have been retained but redesigned for the new subdivision.
