At my architecture related job, a question came up regarding a building that used to exist at Van Buren & Racine. Supposedly it had a clock tower. I took an interest into finding info about this building but there doesn't seem to be anything out there. Anyone know?

So according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, Samuel Eberly Gross had 2subdivisionsns and built some 10,000 homes in the Chicagoland area. The question is, does anybody know the names of his subdivisions? I know the more popular ones like Alta Vista Terrace, Grossdale & Hollywood (which eventually turned into Brookfield, IL) and Gross Park (on Henderson & Paulina) but that leaves some 19 more. I know some other names are Under-the-Linden (I believe Humboldt Park) and Argyle Park (Uptown) and the nameless (I think) subdivision on Monroe & 5th Avenue in the East Garfield Park area that was featured in Unexpected Chicago but I can't find any info on them. Anybody got any leads, information, pictures or answers? Thanks!

So has anyone been down 43rd Street lately, right off the El stop at 43rd? There are two buildings there that seem to have a past but I'm not able to find anything on them. The first one is located right off the 43rd stop, just east of the station. At first I thought it was originally a church but looking at it further I think it was maybe once a commercial structure or maybe an early theater. It's a solid brick building located right on 43rd and Calumet. Mysteriously, the words "The Forum" are engraved on top of the building, which made me think maybe this was a theater. Any leads anybody??

Second building is about 3 blocks from the 43rd stop, right on the Northeast corner 43rd and King Drive. It's a tall, 9 stories, buff colored brick building that really sticks out in the neighborhood (or maybe it didn't stick out so much at a time when the area was more built up prior to urban renewal) I'm guessing it might have been a hotel during the Colombian exposition but I haven't found any info on this place. The building remains me a lot of the Yale Apartments on 6565 South Yale. Any clues?

Okay, in history class, when I was in grammar school and we were discussing Chicago history, my teacher told us a lot of stories about Chicago, and one stuck in my mind some 15 years later. She told us this story that I think took place sometime in the 1880-1890's about a woman who had a large tree in front of her house and the city was expanding, and eventually the city workers would have to tear down the tree so the street could be laid. So this women, everyday would bring lemonade and cookies to the workers, and when they came up to tree, they conveniently curved around the tree, thus making the street curve, and then curve back to avoid the tree. Has anyone ever heard of such a story or was Catholic school filling my head with lies?! lol. Someone once told me they think the tree in question was the "Lombard Tree" which is why there is a section west of Garfield Park named Lombard Tree but I'm not sure about that. Any takes on this question?

A freind of mine remebers her mother working at a restaraunt that used to be located in the loop on Wabash near Adams. It could have been a bit north of Adams but definitely in that area. It was on the east side of the street, was fairly large, and she remembers ir having a seperate area where the men could go (not sure about that). She says it reminded her of the modern day Berghoff's. It was suggested to her that it was the Stouffers restaurant but she doesn't think so. Can anybody indentify this restaurant?

They're listed as the developers of the Kimball Blvd subdivision where the house I grew up in was located. I believe this may be the parcel of land that was sold around the late thirties by the son of Pehr Peterson, owners of the Rosehill Nursery. On Google the firm's name comes up as developer of several subdivision in that area, mostly for houses built in the early 1940s, but nothing comes up about the firm. There is a 1917 obituary in the Chicago Tribune for an Isadore Salinger of Milwaukee who was the father of Oliver Salinger. For a blog post I'm writing about my childhood home, I'm wondering if this is the same person and any information about the firm. Thanks.

I've often wondered about the area around Grand/Halsted/Milwaukee. Seemed at one time to be a bustling, thriving district. The heavy Italian influence is still evident in the Gonnella Bread Co headquarters further west near Ogden, and up until a few years ago, the old Como Inn. I also read somewhere that at the beginning of the 20 th century, the Sicilian Mob had it's roots.

Here's a pic from 1930. the "Italian Trust and Savings Bank" is now Emitts Irish Pub, the "Antonio Romano" drug store a vacant lot, and the building directly across Halsted a condo/high rise

I'm intrigued by the old funeral home at the corner of Grand and Marshfield...1624 W Grand...erected in 1873, which means it was erected shortly after the fire.

old timers in the area claim the apartments on the upper floors were very elegant.
I've been in the funeral home structure and it's a very old old building with some remnants of its funeral home legacy still visible

I know that it is used by Esperanza Community Services, a school for the disabled and handicapped. Esperanza also occupies the one story @ 1620 W Grand, and the old school down the block @ 520 N Marshfield.

I was wondering if anyone had any info on this area and some history surrounding the old school and funeral home.
It seems that it was a moderately significant event, with 400 athletes participating (compared to 1300 in the LA Olympics of the same year). Details are sketchy, though. There is a journal article I am unable to access full text of and just a few casual references here and there online. Does anybody have any info on this? Where were the events held?

Hello, I'm hoping that somebody can help me with a project I am working on...I need to find pre-1960 photos (preferably copyright-free) of Fullerton Avenue between Kedzie & Pulaski and of the intersection at Belmont & Kimball. I've searched all over the internet and found some very good online image resources, but have not been able to track down shots of these specific areas. I am working on an urban planning project and would like to use the images to illustrate how the built environment has changed over the past few decades. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Folks,

I am trying to find the demolition date of a building on the West Side near Garfield Park at 3825 W Madison Street (fuller address is 3813-29).

Built in 1921 as Dirscoll's Danceland by Woltersdorf and Bernhard, later known as the Golden Pumpkin cabaret lounge, and most recently (and for the longest amount of time) known the Cascade Bowling Alley, on this site now stands an Aldi grocery store. The last scrap of info I can find on this building ends in 1986 and at that point it was still a bowling alley. Does anyone have any insights or memories of when this building may have been torn down??

Here's a photo of it from the 1950(?)'s
<div id="div_094b1c2a15fe77101dfd31280a5a6b5e"

Ive been viewing the site on Historic Aerials and i see that there was some type of huge complex between 1939 and 1988. For the life of me, I cant remember what it was. I know many of you can answer this one..thanks (a side note- although the new Wright college is impressive better adapted and accommodating for the students, its a shame to see the old building be left behind and renamed)
