I have searched the internet for information about it, or a picture & it's like the place never existed. It was a huge record store near Rolling Stone records & specialized in import records.
Not Chicago per se, but...

In Franklin Park, visible from 294 around Franklin Ave, behind two white water tanks, an old Burger King sign stands. The '70s-era logo has faded to the point of being barely visible but you can still make out the word 'King' and the lower bun half. It's not an advertising billboard - it's only big enough to hold the logo.

Was there a Burger King warehouse or some such facility near there?

Does anyone know what the large facility shown below on Google Maps is? In case the link doesn't work, it's just to the East of the railroad tracks, at 104th and Harvard. It appears to be some sort of City of Chicago facility, as evidenced by the "Y"-device on the front door. There also appears to be a large, more modern annex to the South. A pumping station of some kind, perhaps?

The "Old Rare Chicago Restaurants" thread calls to mind a phenomenon that I've always found intriguing: middle-of-block businesses on side streets. There are not too many of these, at least anymore. Perhaps there were once more. Off the top of my head, I can think of the following: there is an Irish bar in Canaryville, there is a store on Erie a couple of blocks west of Ashland, and there is a store in Hyde Park a couple blocks east of Cottage Grove and south of 55th, I think. There used to be a bar, Kelly's on the Green, on Greenview south of Diversey, I think, but it closed in the late '90's or early '00's. There used to be a store, Pete's - discussed on this forum - on Armitage a couple blocks west of Oak Park Avenue, and there was a bar a couple blocks west of Pete's on Armitage. Both closed in the '70's or '80's.

Does anyone else know of other mid-block, side-street businesses that are still in operation?

My grandparents owned an apartment building on Winona duringthe 30's.
His name was Joseph Weisz married to Mary Weisz. I know they also lived on Carmen Avenue but think that building has been torn down.I'd love to find the Winona address as I'm coming to Chicago next month and it would be wonderful to see that building. My parents lived at 1230 Caarmen when I was born and then moved to 1258 Winona( Harry Weisz) but I don't think the grandparents lived in either of those buildings.
I would really appreciate any information!
Thanks,

soccer/baseball field behind Western Pumping Station (7 replies)

This was inspired by the "Sparta Stadium" thread:

Recently on Google Maps and streetview I noticed a large soccer field located behind the Western Avenue Pumping Station at 4933 S. Western. If you look on streetview you can see that the field is elevated, as if it is set up above the water pipes/tanks connected to the station.

Does anyone know about the history of this field and or its current use? Has anyone ever used it?

I looked on historic aerials and it used to have two baseball diamonds. At some point in the 80's the baseball footprint starts to fade and the soccer field emerges - that is actually kind of fascinating to track by looking at the different aerials - probably due to demographic changes in the neighborhood.

I haven't been able to find anything about this field on the internet. It does not appear to be a park district park. It may have a lock on the gate.

I'd be interested in any information anyone could offer.

I am currently writing my master's thesis on the Czech Pavilion at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The pavilion was designed by Czech architect Kamil Roskot and reflected modern architectural trends in Czechoslovakia with a sleek facade and minimal ornamentation. The interior exhibits showcased the country's industry, traditional handicrafts and tourist sites and acted as a backdrop for Chicago's large Czech community to celebrate their heritage through demonstration of the Sokol. I argue that this dual representation was the product of the Czech government's desire to promote a forward-looking identity while the Czech-American community maintained cultural traditions that had been passed down between generations.

My first chapter discusses the establishment of the Czech community in Chicago, from its roots in Praha/Pilsen and later move to Berwyn and Lawndale, concluding with the election of Mayor Cermak and his critical role in securing Czech participation. The second chapter focuses on the fair organizer's preference for an "Old Europe" model of foreign participation, and their efforts in promoting a scheme that was largely rejected by countries that wished to promote their own advancements in science and technology. My final chapter situates the Czech pavilion within Roskot's career and broader architectural trends and analyzes its function as the official representation of the newly established government.

I have followed the forum for a while now and I hoping that the collective knowledge here may be able to help me fill in some remaining gaps. I am particularly interested in these two areas:

1) What was the reception of the Czech Pavilion in the community- what did members of the Czech community think about its design?

2) Western Electric was a central part of the Czech community-- not only did it symbolize modernity, it also enabled Czechs to establish themselves financially and purchase a single-family home. Who built it? What kind of work did they do? Were Czechs active in labor unions? Was there a sense of community within Western Electric? BerwynFrank, I saw that you have a book in the works on Western Electric, I would be grateful for any insight you might be able to provide about the buildings and work environment.

Paul Nemecek at the Genealogical Society has been immensely helpful in my research, as have the librarians at UIC, CPL and the Chicago History Museum. I do not believe I will be able to make a final research trip before my thesis is completed in May, so any input is really appreciated!

All Best,

I've been doing a little research on a Chicago soccer team, Sparta A.B.A. The team was formed by Czech immigrants and they were very popular during the late 1920s and early 1930s.

They played at Sparta Stadium which was located at 21st St. and Kostner Ave. The last mention of Sparta Stadium in the Chicago Tribune archives is from November 30, 1953. Sparta Stadium does not appear in Tribue articles after that date.

There is a vacant lot at 21st Street and Kostner Avenue on a Google Maps photo from 2009.

If anyone has any information regarding the demise of Sparta Stadium, I would be very interested in learning how it met its end.
It is all cement, older than McCormick Place for sure. It is 12-14 square feet. It has designs of corn on it. There use to be 2 on each side of Cermak...3 were removed when they took Cermak out in the 1980's.

If anyone knows anything about this structure, it would easy my curious mind!
Thanks!

Hi, a friend of mine is an author, has written one book about Eliot Ness, and we are looking for any old pictures to copy, personal information or, best of all, anybody who actually knew the man, the other men, or even his family.

It's a long-shot, I know. Especially if anybody is still this side of the grass who knew Ness or any of the Untouchables, but what the heck?

We have pretty much been to all the public sites (on the net) and other places, but will appreciate any tips.

This info is for a second book.

Thanks in advance.

Clybourn train station/neighborhood? (2 replies)

I often find that walking around an area brings a completely different awareness vs.driving.

So after decades driving around the near northwest side, it struck me like a bolt of lightning while destination walking down Clybourn Avenue ... the Clybourn train station is not anywhere near Clybourn Avenue.

The Wikipedia entry for the train station states: "It is called Clybourn because nearby West Cortland Street was part of Clybourn before Clybourn was extended North." But it also says the station opened in 1923 (seems late), so even if Cortland had been part of Clybourn at one time, the northern extension would have been created by that time. So something seems amiss about the wikipedia.

Instead of being named after the street (like Western Avenue or Kedzie), I'm wondering if Clybourn has a similar root usage to Healy and Grayland on the Milwaukee Road North. And what would that history be? Simply railroad-invented names/communities? Actual villages/subdivisions/neighborhoods that long ago were overridden by other names (Wicker Park, Hemosa, Irving Park, etc.)?

Does anyone remember this place from the 1960's? I found an intriguing news report from Feb. 1968 that said two white street gangs had a fight in this place, causing the police to shut it down. Apparently, it was run by a "Reverend Johnson" and his wife. This was a pretty working class neighborhood, and it made we wonder whether Chicago had coffee houses outside of Old Town and Hyde Park.
BTW, the address is now, of course, condos.

Mom says he always shopped at the local Standard Gas Station. Do any of you recall this promotion and more importantly, do you know anyone selling their collection of these?

My grandmother lived about a half block north of Grand on Aberdeen (then known as Curtis) about 1900-1910. I'm sure that years ago I saw a photo of that block at the Chicago History Museum but have been unable to relocate it in recent years.
The date was Sept 21, 1964. I checked with the LBJ Library and learned that LBJ had a reception on that date in the White House for leaders of fraternal organizations. They sent me the list of the attendees which is rather lengthy. Many are from the Chicago area, for example the Polish National Alliance, the Catholic Order of Forresters, Italo American National Union, etc. I am just wondering if anyone might recognize the fellow that LBJ is shaking hands with. Thanks. Alan

Some sixty plus years ago, I often ate at beaneries on State, near the Chicago Theater and on Wabash, south of VanBuren. The name ws E. W. Rieck's, or something similar. They served baked beans in a crock, which they emptied on your plate. Accompaning the beans were home made whit and brown bread. They also had very tasty vegetable soup. I also ate quite often at a cafeteria at Lake and Wabash (Waldorf?), enjoying roast beef on a hard roll, and at the Dainty on Wabash between Lake and Randolph, behind the Chicago Theater. Many of the visiting actors would stop in there for lunch. I once sat next to Jerry Colonna when he was appearing on statge at the Chicago.
