Old Newspaper boxes/detritus Illinois and New Street (2 replies)

On Saturday 7/17/10 I was walking by a vacant lot at the SW corner of Illinois and New Street. The lot is surrounded by about 6-ft high fence covered with opaque cloth of some kind. On the Illinois side there is a driveway cut in the sidewalk and a gate and opening in the fence.

As I walked by this opening, I saw about 5 or 6 newspaper boxes, and noticed that at least a few of them were from old, defunct newspapers: there was a green Chicago American box and one for The National Sports Daily, which I think went out of business in the early '90's. Both of these boxes still contained newspapers. There also appeared to be an old mailbox. The rest of the lot contained lots of other piles of junk, but nothing identifiable like the newspaper boxes.

Note that these were not replicas - they were worn and rusted and the newspapers in them were yellowed.

I stopped and started to go past the fence to try to examine the boxes more closely, but was stopped by a security guard who was outside on the street. I later thought about going back and trying to sneak in but saw the guard vigilantly stopping other people, so I declined.

I would be grateful if anyone could shed any light on these boxes or the happenings at this strange lot.

My original quest was to see if the art deco Lady Esther plant at 7171 W. 65th and the National Aluminate plant at 6221 West 66th Place (see [snuffy.lib.umn.edu]) were still there. When I got to the first location, I saw what looked like the same shaped building, but covered now with a new reddish brick exterior. I then tried to get to the second location, but it is Nalco fenced property and inaccessible. For the heck of it I drove around the area and was pleasantly surprised to find a number of interesting structures, facades and logos from the Clearing Industrial District days. I thought I would share some of my photos, if you might find interesting. (I hope the two methods below from Picasa show up correctly.)
Man is pushing another man in a wheelchair up (after racking my brain) what I believe is the Ogden Ave overpass at Evergreen. It seems they approach the overpass coming east on Evergreen from Halsted. The "American Roller Co." sign is evident in the distance, which was @ 1342 N Halsted, in 1963.

HI, growing up I remember railroad tracks that ran next to the Brickyard on the Northwest side. I remember even seein a train cross Grand avenue and I thought it was the coolest thing. According to an old map it ran up to Irving. The tracks that crossed Belmont and Addison are now gone. I know they serviced some of the factories on Diversy and Nashville. Was this a remnant of the old crazy train? Were the used for funerals in the cemetary on Addison and Narragassett? Any information and old pictures would be appreciated.

Ive got another topic for all.. Growing up in our neighborhood my parents would send us out to purchase ice from the Jefferson Ice Co. vending machine. It was on the east side of Pulaski just south of Le Moyne st. If i remember correctly it was huge(for a kid) and yellow. After putting coinage into the slot it would distribute bagged ice at the bottom dispenser. Does anyone here have photos of this particular machine or maybe a link to one similar? Another fond memory and a Forgotten aspect of Chicago.

Got another question for FCF
At the s/w corner of Narragansett ave. and School st. there stands a very old and very interesting building that i have passed many many times in my life. It has what seems may have been a loading area of some kind with cemented steps on either side facing each other with an interesting brickwork facade and a huge doorway at the front end. An arched doorway is on the School st side as well. Ive always wondered what were the origins of this defunct business/company.Possibly a city owned building as well. It seems to be quiet and unused these days. There are no obvious signs or markings to suggest what it may have been used for in its heyday . When i viewed it at Google map and also at Historic Aerial I could see that the building also has an atrium of some sort at the center. Historic Aerial shows that it has been there since as early as 1938. Check it out on Google. Anyone know of its history????

if you're looking for any kind of historical info, "Google Books" is a great feature to check with, if nothing comes up in a conventional websearch. thousands of books, documents and publications are there in a searchable database, some full-view, some partial, some as snippets. when i could come up with virtually nothing about that old Isolation Hospital at 35th and Lawndale, i found a relative treasure trove on Google Books.

when i noticed a neighborhood of densely-packed diagonal streets showing up on pre-1871 maps, just northwest of where Bridgeport is, i was curious what it was called and what became of it. turns out it was the proposed town of Canalport, which was platted but never built. even the Encyclopedia of Chicago website didn't have any info on that - but Google Books had a legal document from 1865.

try it out.

old aerials show some sort of development just west of Pulaski on 79th, which would later become Rainey Park. 1938 aerials show nothing in the area; a substantial-sized subdivision suddenly appears in the 1951 aerial, and then disappears again in the 1962 shot, replaced by the park and the current homes just to the north. it almost looks like an army base, with long buildings along the east perimeter, and small housing filling the rest. whatever it was, sprang up during WWII and then disappeared, which makes me think it was some kind of military installation.
anyone know? i can't seem to find anything.

I was exploring Bronzeville and related south side sites recently and came across an old above ground level train right of way (heading east and west) at Vincennes and about 39th. No bridge over the street anymore though. So I kept driving around and found more pieces of this visible from S Lake Park, Drexel and Cottage Grove. Here's my google album of a few captioned pictures, including a google maps view which shows the now brush-covered tracks.

[picasaweb.google.com]

I checked Historic Aerials and see that the 1962 view seems to show an operating track with bridges, with the track heading east and merging into tracks parallel to the lakefront. The next 1970s view shows the bridges gone, so it must have closed down by then.

Any info as to what line this was?

I went through Washington Park this past Sunday and I noticed a lovely but lonely boarded-up building that was labelled "The Chalet" by an official Chicago Park District sign. I couldn't find any information on it online. Does anyone know what it was used for and when the last time it was open? It looks like it may have been a concession stand at some point.

I know there is an Orphanage on South King Drive.
Dunning/Chicago Reed is pretty much gone.
What was the name of the sanitarium at Peterson park?

Just wondering what was here, and what is left.
Thanks,
