its been a super long time, but if my memory serves me right, was there a 76 gas station located at the northwest corner of 31st and kedzie. Someone has a photo of texaco at 27th and kedzie on flickr. Anybody have photo of 76?

it could have been Pure Oil before 1970. As most were in the eastern half of the US.

I seem to remember that Pure changed to Union 76 in 1976 and associated that with the bi-centennial.

Pure Oil was sold to Union Oil and by 1970, they were all branded 'Union 76'.

However, Union Oil's '76' brand was formed in 1932, long before the Bicentennial. '76' refered to the 'Spirit of 1776' and 76 Octane. Union was based in S. California, then were bought by ConocoPhillips.

From what I remember, It was in 1970 that Pure Oil became Union 76 in the eastern half. However, Even as of today, There are still some Pure oil stations in the South, Or they were reincarnated as newer stations.
