even more "Goldstein"...vintage 1963 Chicago
now demolished building at Fulton and Canal..looking west on Fulton...across from old Braun Bottle plant..I'm taking a guess here
approximately Rush and Delaware, looking north on Rush...this would have been taken in front of the old Maryland Hotel, which is now condo....the Bragno Wine shop in the background is now Urban Outfitters
approximately 1030 N Rush...view of old Carnegie Theatre sign in background...now Hugo's Frog Bar and Gibson's...
I think this is a bit of trick photography...the Webster (then the Webster Hotel) at 2150 N Lincoln Park West is in the foreground, and the Palmolive Building and beacon, 919 N Michigan in background.
I'll try to show some "now" views when I can...

Partially visible in the photo above the sign the Bragno Wine Shop is Universal Recording Studio - tons of great songs recorded there.
That building was also Hamburger Hamlet for a while.

according to this view (probably early 50's judging from the autos in the pic), there was a completely different structure on the NE corner of Rush and Walton prior to Urban Outfitters/Hamburger Hamlet/Universal/Bragno

Wow, interesting! I looked into it; the Cook County Assessor has the Urban Outfitters building showing up in around 1954 (right around the time Universal recorded the Chess Records rock-n-roll singles), and in the 1952 aerial view the turrets and bays of the old building can be clearly seen.
How is 'Goldstein', anyway? It looks like it has a lot of interesting people like Del Close and Severn Darden.

also note in the early 50's Rush/Walton pix, "Banquet on a Bun" on the right and the "Isbell's" neon marquee with the dinging animated "bells" at the top of the sign. I read somewhere there was another Isbell's on Diversey back in the day.
When I first started watching "Goldstein", I had no idea what the heck was going on. I watched it a bit more to go thru the locations and I finally got what the director was shooting for. The premise is a bit far fetched. It is interesting to see the early Second City people. I saw a post online on another board of a woman who had a small speaking part, when she was a waitress at the Gaslight Club..She said the script was all improvisation. There's also a weird cameo of Nelson Algren doing a stream of consciousness monologue.

I just went to FuzzyMemories.TV (I'm sure most here have been to that site)and found a LOOP FM 98 Commercial. It shows a short, and I mean short, clip of this section of street...in front of the Banquet On A Bun.
Is this the same Banquet on a Bun? The sign in the background to the left I can only see the letters 'CES", so it is not the ISBELLS sign I am seeing (maybe a name change at some point)...but that sign in the background looks like the Carnegie sign with that same angle on top...or maybe I just think it does.
I had the video posted, but it went straight to video, without you having to click start....I figured most would not want that. So if your intersted, check it out.

I'm not sure where you are seeing CES in the color picture. The marquee says "ISBELL'S".... In the black and white "Goldstein" picture, there are a few letters missing, and apparently only the "ISBE.." is lit up, so maybe that's what you're referring to. Marion Isbell was a wealthy Chicago restauranteur, who founded Ramada Inn.
This view looks south at the intersection of Walton and Rush. Note the "Isbell" sign. Near the very top of the pix there is "Tony's Cell-R", 909 N Rush, and then a couple of doors north you can faintly see "Banquet on a Bun"

captain54...I am sorry for the confusion, but I was referring to the video I found on FuzzyMemories.TV...the site on old Chicagoland commercials. It was on a April 21st, 1981 Loop FM98 Commercial, there is a brief, and I mean brief shot of some guys in front of Banquet On A Bun with what looks to be the Carnegie in the far background, but what would be ISBELLS, the letters on the sign that I see are definitely "CES"...at least that is the only letters that are visible.
Let me know if you want me to post the video or send it to you directly. The problem with the video when I tried posting it was that it was going straight to play and soon as the thread was opened.....I can send it you way, or maybe you know of a way it can be posted....or better yet, just a frame shot at 9-11 seconds.

The "CES" you see off in the background and over the guy with the keyboard's head is the marquee of "FACES" disco/nightclub @ 940 N Rush. Chicago's equivalent to NYC's Studio 54, back in the disco days.

Wow, so Banquet On A Bun was around a long time.
Anyone know what the place was with the hanging'B/G' and the crowd of people in front of it? It looks to be on the corner of Rush and Oak in the b&w photo.

I believe that's the 25 E Oak building, formerly Barney's...and it's part of the Oak Street fashion strip and from what I can remember B/G was a high end fashion/clothing store.

Here's a scan of a Universal Recording tape box. The tape itself is nothing special (an ad for United Airlines) but I think the box is outstanding - sure beats the ones 3M used to use, at least.

"B&G was a 24 hour diner type restaurant. It had multiple booths that looked out of windows facing the Oak Street Side, and one that faced the Rush Street side. It later became The Oak Tree restaurant. Both served the Rush St. night life crowd on a continual basis.
There was one regular, rather surly waitress that worked at B&G. Notorious for just throwing your plates on the table."

Excellent find regarding B/G! Over the weekend I came across a photo of a now-gone building at 53rd and Lake Park which had another B/G; the photo was hanging on a wall and I couldn't get close enough to see any more detail. Thanks again!

Other info gathered from "Cinema Treasures" is a reference to the "Singapore" neon marquee, on the east side of Rush, a few doors north of Oak. Very prominent in the pix I posted 3/30/10, apparently had animated monkeys lit up to simulate climbing up the sign!
here is a clip from "Nightbeat"..the late nite WGN newscast circa 1980..the opening footage are some montages of various Chicago scenes, probably from the early 70's
although hard to see the animation, there is a brief shot of the Singapore marquee, (about :26)..and conincidentally, a shot of the Singapore marquee and the B/G sign (about :32)

The Gino's Pizzeria sign whizzes by at :29, then at :30 the Punchinello's sign, and at :42 it looks like Tony's *something* A-Go-Go...changed from Tony's Cellar, perhaps?

I've revisited that picture a number of times and I think
you may be right...I can't quite put my finger though, on
what building north and somewhat west of 2150 LPWest would
have given the photographer that perspective.

Joe Segal has old showbills of Jazz Showcase nights at the Happy Medium hanging on the walls at the Dearborn Station location. The Rovin' Kind, the band on the marquee at the Whiskey, at one point had Peter Cetera in its ranks in a prior line-up.

Pretty neat to see Milt Trenier's name on the Scotch Mist marquee...I backed him a couple of times in the past and he has incredible stories. The next time I see him I'll see if he remembers that particular engagement.

there's an HD version of that footage on youtube that has a bit more detail.
there's a place with the address "426" @ :42, which leads me to believe some of the joints weren't necessarily in and around Rush Street. There's no address corresponding to "426" in that area, to the best of my knowledge.
However, I think some of those places could have been east of state/rush....I saw an address "6 East"...looking at that area now, its hard to imagine.
I remember the original Milt Trenier's near LSD and Ohio. What a fascinating guy he must be.

I believe Dearborn and Clark north of the river were pretty darn seedy...you can still see some of the remnants of that era on Hubbard between LaSalle and Dearborn..

Imagine how 'connected' those burlesque houses must have been; the elder Daley obviously couldn't or wouldn't close them down...

I know for a fact "Bourbon Street" was mob connected, and probably many more
I would imagine the reason a lot of those places stayed open for so long was because it was probably very profitable for all levels of government, police, ward bosses, Cook County Sheriff's Dept, to look the other way in terms of all the vice, gambling, etc. that was going on.
and of course, a lot of old timers will tell you that Rush street wasn't always seedy, that is was once the city's legitimate Cabaret/Nightclub strip,

I know for a fact "Bourbon Street" was mob connected, and probably many more
I would imagine the reason a lot of those places stayed open for so long was because it was probably very profitable for all levels of government, police, ward bosses, Cook County Sheriff's Dept, to look the other way in terms of all the vice, gambling, etc. that was going on.
and of course, a lot of old timers will tell you that Rush street wasn't always seedy, that is was once the city's legitimate Cabaret/Nightclub strip,

My aprents went to Mr. Kelly's in 1960 and saw Bob Newhart when he was starting ouit in stand up.
One other thing is Chicago didn't have as many high rises along lakefront until the late 60's, the old Rush St pics have a more neighborhood feel. Now, it's like Manhatten.
