How were you able to figure out where the Milwaukee Ave. scenes were?
Great work again.
By the way, according to the Tribune, on 10/20/59 the bar at 1034 N. Milwaukee was known as the Brown Jug Tavern, and got its liquor license revoked.

There was a great article in the Tribune earlier this year called "Lost Chicago, found on Film" written by Pat Reardon, and he nailed the location of that scene..

I did a little digging around and found a court document from 81' about someone being accused of robbing a "Kosinski Jewelers", and they gave the address as 5700 W Belmont, so I'm assuming Kosinski's was relocated after the 60's urban renewal program that wiped out that entire block

They were about someone getting beat up or killed there or near there, and the bar then getting hit with license or code violations, I think.
The Wanda's house thing will be fun to track down. Where is there a railroad in the 700 block of some street?

Searching through old Tribune articles, I found one of the taverns shown in the montage of taverns, as he's looking for Wanda.
It was B.G. Kopielski's tavern, which was at 1101 N. Noble, which is just south of Holy Trinity church and is now a pedestrian district in the middle of a 60's-era housing development. The tavern building itself is long gone.
I don't know if there are any other identifying signs or other features on the other taverns, but if I can identify any I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the heads up on Kopielski's..I forgot that you had posted that last month..The flickr.com page had been duly updated with your info.
As far as Wanda's house, that one is gonna be tricky You basically have the house being in the 700 South, 700 North, or 700 West blocks. I figured if you traced
along 700 South (Polk) from State St going west a few miles, you would have to locate an elevated track and viaduct that ran east and west. The same principal would apply if the house was at 700 North, only you would track along Superior
street.
If the house was in the 700 West block, you would have to trace an elevated track that ran north and south at Union Street, which runs from 600 N to 12900 S
this is of course, assuming that the prop crew didn't play fast and loose with the
house numbers like they did with the street sign. They may have anticipated a backlash against "Wanda" and might have tried to camouflage the house location.
One identifiable feature is the narrow street that runs between the embankment and the side walk, and which is, I'm assuming, the 700 W, 700 S, or 700 N block...and also, since the address ends in an odd number, if the house is on a N or S block, it'll be on the east side of the street. If it's on a block that runs east and west, it'll be on the south side of the street.
I tried to do a Google Satellite view but couldn't pick up the detail...the next step I guess is to dig up some old Chicago railroad maps from the late 40's.

Question about "Hogarth's" at 759 S. State. I haven't seen the movie in a while, but recall this scene has Stewart coming out of a subway entrance. I don't see a subway entrance around 759 S. State. Did the CTA get rid of this entrance? Thanks, just curious!

when the State Street subway was built in the 40's it originally had two south exits of the Harrison stop, that being the Polk Street east and west exits... Jimmy Stewart exits from the east exit...it was originally built to accomodate rail travelers coming to Dearborn Station.. the original plans called for the exits to one day become also entrances to accomodate passengers coming from the station, but it never happened.
When Dearborn station fell in to disuse, the Polk Street exits were closed in 1968.
Polk Street east exit in 1971, still closed
Eventually, the exit was removed and entirely paved over.
I was reading a couple of years back that the CTA had plans to re-open the west Polk street exit with a turnstyle for entry, as it was originally intended back in the 40's

Thanks for the clarification...nice photo too. I'm surprised that section of store fronts was demolished by 1971.

My best guess is that the area in and around where Jimmy Stewart exited the subway in "northside 777" in 1948, was a place you would not to find yourself after dark...the area was basically centered around Dearborn Station and the surrounding RR yard, and then you had the straglers from the flophouses, peep shows and honky tonks, further north on State...
Pacific Garden Mission was right there @ 646 S State, for over 80 yrs, right smack dab in the center of all the bums,hobos,and winos...from the PCM website:
"On January 30, 1923, due to the shifting of the hobo jungle, God brought Pacific Garden Mission to its present location at 646 South State Street. This area of Chicago, just south of the loop, was referred to as "Murderer's Row" because so many people had been killed there in recent years. I just came across this thread and find it interesting. Weren't the interoir scenes in the police station shot in what is now the "old" Deering station, which in later years was the 9th District at 35th and Lowe? There were numerous shots of the des, an office, later the watch commander's office and the lockup.

I'll have to take another look at the film, but I remember seeing the lettering "New City" across the building somewhere, which leads me to believe that it was a former station in the Back of the Yard/Canaryville district of the city. I do remember finding info that there was a station on 47th street somewhere between Damen and Ashland up until the 50's or 60's
It would be easy enough though to catch some screen grabs of the "Northside 777" station and compare them to current views of the 35th and Lowe station, keeping in mind though that a lot of those neighborhood stations were kind of generic so they could have been anywhere.

New City police station was, if memory serves me corrrectly, at the northwest corner of 47th and Paulina, 4700 W. 47th Street, according to my ancient Leonards' Chicago Street Guide. I worked at the 35th and Lowe station, and the interior shots are clearly from there. It is interesting to note that during a scene at the desk, the view from the windows is in the background and visible is an apartment building that was torn down later. That area is/was the parking lot for the district vehicles. It may be that there was an exterior shot of the New City station, I don't remember. I will have to get the movie and watch it again.

exterior shot of the police station here never really shows McNeal walking thru those doors to the right, so obviously they used the exterior and not the interior of the New City facility
Patrolman Norman Ade poses in front of the old 17th District, the “New City” police station, located at 47th and Paulina in 1939
the New City station was more than likely eliminated when the Englewood station was built in the 50's @ 61st and Racine...also, the 17th District is now Albany Park @ Montrose and Pulaski.

Whoops, excuse my type. Of course it was at 1700 W. 47th ST. New City was not eliminated until O.W. Wilson became the Superintendent of Police in 1960. He downsized districts from 40 to 21 both as an economy of scale, cost cutting plan and also to eliminate the fact that police districts largely mirrored ward boundaries, and he wanted little political interference. New City was consoladated with Brighton Park and Stockyards into the Deering District or 9th District. It is interesting that the surviving district of the 3 just happened to be a half block from Mayor Daley's residenceAll district numbers were changed as a result of the consoladations. You are right that the Englewood station was built in the 50's, I believe replacing one at about 63rd and Wentworth. Englewood co-existed with New City until the consoladotion. That Englewood station has now also been replaced by a new on on 63rd Street.
I believe that in 1948 the Deering station was fairly new, which is probably why they used it for interiors. It also appears to me that the stone work on the picture is the Deering station, with a New City sign added. If you look at both, it is obvious that the brick and stone work is entirely different.
It is interesting as a side note that there were a couple of Ades on the Police Department into the 80's or 90's. It is quite likely that the officer shown in the photo was an ancestor

Good call..the 9th District 35th and Lowe station exterior brick work in the CN 777 screenshot looks identical to the present view of the station, minus the mounted lighted "Police" lantern. And judging from the 1939 pix, the New City facility looks a bit older, thus not matching the CN 777 faux "New City" facility.
Also, in the present view, you can see the parking lot on the NE corner where the apartment building you mentioned stood in 1948
there was also the West Lawn station near 63rd near Central Park that maybe have eliminated the need for the New City station, because I'm guessing that old 17th district encompassed West Lawn
Correct also on Patrolman Ades being an ancestor...the pix actually was taken from a CPD webpage featuring the Ades family with 80 years of service in the CPD

The station that you refer to in the vicinity of 63rd and Central Park, was known as Chicago Lawn. It was at 3515 W. 63rd St, just west of St. Louis. New City also co-existed with Chicago Lawn until the Wilson reorganization. Chicago Lawn, the 8th Distrct after reorganization, is/was the largest police district in area, in Chicago. It was bordered on the south by 87th St, city limits, as far west as Harlem north of 65th St, and as far north as the river, west of Kedzie. The eastern border was Kedzie from the river to 55th Street, and Bell Ave. from there south. I believe, but I am not sure that the new building is in the approximate location of the old Suburban Laundry, if anyone remembers that.
I believe that the north border of New City was 51st St, and that the west border was, at least, partially Western Ave. The Brighton Park Station, 39th and California had the area west of there to about Kedzie.

chicago Lawn, not West Lawn...right, my bad.
not sure about what occupied 63rd and Homan, where the new station is located..Historic Aerials shows a sort of gas station like structure at that corner throughout the 60's and 70's..but I can't be for 100%...
there is an interesting feature on this webpage on abandoned and disused Police stations that is somewhat related to this thread...
also, I started a thread on the old "M-Squad" tv show from the late 50's that had some discussion about old Police Stations..the burning question and an answer that seems to elude me is whether or not the old Superior and Racine station that was demolished for the Kennedy Xpressway was abandoned when M-Squad filmed there, and if so, was that location used for the interiors of the police station scenes.

Whops, for some reason I thought the new Chicago Lawn was across the street from the old one, but you are correct, it is not. I don't know what was at that location either.

It would seem to me all interiors would have been filmed in Hollywood. The exterior stuff is mostly B roll and in fact, many of the exterior scenes are clearly from a sound stage (or in a couple instance I think on the streets of LA).
I have a hunch the station was abandoned when the show filmed exteriors there. One piece of silly evidence is that in a common shot of the station, looking directly east on Superior from the west side of Racine, Superior has not been plowed of snow but Racine has. I also can't imagine the CPD would want to busy up the area with film trucks, actors, equipment and cables if it was a working station.

It would seem to me all interiors would have been filmed in Hollywood. The exterior stuff is mostly B roll and in fact, many of the exterior scenes are clearly from a sound stage (or in a couple instance I think on the streets of LA).
I have a hunch the station was abandoned when the show filmed exteriors there. One piece of silly evidence is that in a common shot of the station, looking directly east on Superior from the west side of Racine, Superior has not been plowed of snow but Racine has. I also can't imagine the CPD would want to busy up the area with film trucks, actors, equipment and cables if it was a working station.
